Marienplatz

Description

Marienplatz has been at the thick of things ever since the city was founded by Henry the Lion in 1158. It was once a salt and grain market, but is now a magnet for tourists who flock here to marvel at the Gothic facade of the New Town Hall. The bells in the New Town Hall tower peal at 11a (as well as noon and 5p in the summer) accompanied by a glockenspiel depicting a medieval dance and the wedding of Duke William V and Renata von Lothringen. The Mariensäule stands in the middle of the square.

Fabulous Muchen
By ,
I had a great time in Munchen.. The Sights were amazing and The Food and the People were awesome... I enjoyed watching the Huge Clock in MarienPlatz and I also visted the Deutches Musuem. I shopped on Maximilian Strasse. Which is the main street for all the high end shops ie: Prada, Gucci ect... I actually went into a shop called POOL which had some hot stuff for your body and your home... Great products.. I also enjoyed my time in the Marienplatz and had a great time drinking the Weiss Bier with Lemonade which they call a Radler.. we know it in the states as a Shandy. I enjoyed the Nightlife as well.. I partied at Club Pacha where I saw NYC Singer Kwame Remy perform... It was a fun night of Dancing and the DJ kept me on the dance floor all night long. And also enjoyed The Park Cafe. I also took a tour of downtown Munchen and took a tour of the Hollicaust Museum. This was an awesome trip and I look forward to visiting Munchen again.

Great Any Time of Year
By ,
I have been to Marienplatz several times, and it never ceases to make me smile. It is one of Europe's great squares in my opinion, with a unique Bavarian feel. Whether you are looking for Spaetzle and Bratwurst, a new pair of designer shoes, or just to take in the wonderful atmosphere, it certainly does not disappoint. There is a great outdoor market (Viktualienmarkt)nearby, where the locals go to buy fresh produce and casually drink a liter of Hefeweizen while chatting with friends in the summer, or warm up with Gluehwein and be reminded of sunny vactions of their own with some fresh fruit brought in from the Mediterranean in the winter. It, along with the views of Marienplatz from the top of nearby St. Peter's, are not to be missed.

All and more...!
By ,
There are few places as friendly and warm as Munich, and the Marienplatz is the center of it all. From here you go to all the major sights in the city, plus you're able to dine and drink like the locals. The history sweats out of every building, and you're only left to wonder what it would be like if not for the "bombings" in the 40's...

I loved the experience , the shops and the merchants that sat up outside even in the cold weather. The sights were beautiful. We went at Christmas and were lucky enough to see all the hand made crafts. It is a wonderful experience for the whole family.

The Heart of Munich
By ,
I just adore the Marienplatz. All of the shops are closed on Sunday which is either an advantage or disadvantage depending on your point of view. On the Platz are scores of wonderful restaurants, shops and sites that must be seen if in Munich. The residenz, the frauenkirche, St. Michael's, and gorgeous town hall of Munich with the Glogenspiel are all close at hand. Have a seat on the platz with some beer, sauasage and wait for the 5PM Glockenspiel show on the Town Hall tower showing the wedding of King Wilhelm. All wonderful and memorable. Not too mention relaxing.

Great place to hang out in Munich!
By ,
It was lots of fun to hang out here after a Germany match in the FIFA World Cup - people everywhere, even dancing in the fountain!

If you havent been here, you havent seen Munich's best
By ,
Marienplatz is everything a photographer or a tourist could want to see in Germany. All the buildings are spectacular. There is plenty of food, beer and wine to sample as tastes of Germany. A must see.

Sample Munich Here
By ,
The Marienplatz is a great place to sample Munich food flowers and retail goods. The Glockenspiel is worth waiting for. The statues and fountains add a nice flavor.
