Opened in 1826 by Ludwig I, the Alte Pinakothek (Old Picture Gallery) represents the pinnacle of the Emperor's achievements as a collector. In fact, Ludwig merely continued the work of his ancestors, as some of the pieces exhibited here were first acquired by Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria in the 16th Century. Entering the museum for the first time, visitors are confronted with a truly regal collection; over 800 awesome paintings documenting the history of European art from the 14th to the 18th Centuries await perusal. The collection of old German masters and the gorgeous Rubens gallery are particularly outstanding.
A fantastic museum. If you're looking for any early or late Renaissance artist, you'll find them here. A massive, thorough collection.
Among the highlights are several of Drer's best, including his Self Portrait in a Fur Coat. Also impressive are the two rooms of Peter Paul Rubens. It felt as though his works broke the monotony of the surrounding Italian/Flemish pieces. Portraits, madonnas, generic religious scenes, over and over again - then enter the halls with Ruben's 8-foot wide hunting scenes.
A structural highlight is the staircases up to the second floor gallery.
Admission is fairly inexpensive, so the museum is a great value.
It is a rather small museum containing several paintings of each famous painter. But, the difference with other larger museums is that each painting is a master work. So, here the key words are magnificent quality. It is a most wonderful collection of paintings.
