One of the most highly renowned restaurants in town, Tantris offers fantastic contemporary international cuisine rustled up by master chef Hans Haas. It also features an excellent wine list prepared by sommelière Paula Bosch. The main room, decorated in red and black, seems to tackle life's problems head on: love and death are celebrated in a culinary form and the 'philosophy' of the house is that food is the basis for happiness. There is also a terrace and garden room, which are available for functions on Sundays and Mondays.
I just read a whiney review of Tantris on this site and wanted to comment about it and the restaurant.
I can only think of three reasons why anyone would find Tantris less than the very best in every way, as apparnetly one 2008 review indicates:
1. The writer was too drunk to even know what was being served. Hey, it happens.
2. The writer, in complaining about the 2.5 hours for the tasting menu to be served must not have much experience with such restaurants because the time between courses is intentional and calibrated to allow digestion, conversation, savoring of the meal and wines and allow for an evening of total enjoyment. If you want fast, eat at McDonalds'.
3. The writer has no idea what she is talking about and apparenty has a bug somewhere about up scale dining. She compares with hotel restaurants in Munich, which is a foolish and inappropriate analogy. The rest of the world must be wrong if this person's comments are right.
I personally have had the pleasure of dining at Tantris over a period of more than 30 years under two different chefs and never, even found anything amiss.
If there is any fault with the property it's that they now tend to permit people who are not properly dressed and who obvioulsy may feel that the only qualification is having the money to dine there. Unfortunately, there is more to it than that.
If you like the top of the line style of dining, some of the world's greatest creative cusine, the finest wines available and know what it's really about, you will enjoy Tantris. Lord knows my bank acocunt would be much richer if I had never eaten a meal there, but my life would not be as rich with the dozens of wonderful experiences Tantris has provided.
Unforgetable experience. Had a 8-course menu and 2 bottles of wine. The food was so exquisite. It was the asparagus season, so it was used in couple dishes. Other than that, very gourmet ingridients, like pigeon, pork belly and morells - everything cooked, balanced and presented just perfectly. The lady sommelier was very helpfull and knowelegeble. Highly recommend.
I am from Munich, and am not a tourist here. Tantris is a fantastic restaurant, where I have celebrated more than one special family event with a wonderful meal. Yes, the tasting menu takes hours. That is the whole point. And I am astonished that someone would say if you've eaten in the USA, you can't eat here. This is world-class cuisine, compared to Michelin restaurants I have dined at in Germany, France, Italy... and yes, I have dined at fine restaurants in the USA.
The chef prides himself on cooking international dishes with a fine Bavarian twist, using local ingredients and local traditions. I can only imagine someone calling this over-salted and over-cooked if all they ever eat is un-salted boiled meat and steamed veggies without any sauce.
Too bad, to see such an ignorant review for this gem of a restaurant.
The Michelin 2 star restaurant itself is physically beautiful.

Do not eat here. It may be good compared to typical German fare, but it is NOT good if you come from the United States.
Our meal took an endless 2 and a half hours from start to finish because the service was so slow.
On our six course tasting meal, everything was either oversalted, overcooked, or sour in taste.
A definite no, no matter what the guidebooks may say.

Beautiful restaruant in a suburb setting. They provide complementary limo to sent us back to the hotel. The food was very well cooked and presented. The shellfish dishes were exceptional. The calf's head was a pleasant surprise. The wine was fair. The service was very attentive, professional and very easy for visitors who do not speak German. This is one of the best restaurant we ate at during our stay and also the most expensive. It compares well with other high end restarants in San Francisco especially the service.
