If you've looked in any Cologne guidebooks, you're bound to have come across the Biermuseum. Not that it is a real museum - rather, a bar in the Altstadt with fifty different brands of beer from around the world, eighteen of them 'vom Fass' (on draught). No other bar in Cologne can offer more choice. On two floors, for over twenty years, people have been comparing the various brews. Any serious beer fan in Cologne has been here more than once. Afterwards, you'll be in the mood to visit the legendary Em Streckstrump , right nearby.
On the outside, it looks nice. The big sign invites you in with promises of great beers to sample. On the inside, however, you find an unclean place with an apathetic and rude bartender.
The beers they offer are mediocre at best (even the Belgian ones), and to top things off: people are just smoking in there, despite it being prohibited. Don't try to complain about that though, as you're told to "leave if you don't like it", even in the face of the non- smoking signs on all windows.
Definitely the worst place you want to go to have a good time and try some of the German beers. Try the many bars around the Dom instead.
