Description

The Hackesche Höfe is a notable courtyard complex situated adjacent to the Hackescher Markt in the centre of Berlin. The complex consists of eight interconnected courtyards, accessed through a main arched entrance at number 40 Rosenthaler Straße. The complex was designed in the Jugendstil (or Art Nouveau) style by August Endel, and the first courtyard is adorned with a magnificent facade of polychrome glazed brick. The construction of this project, launched in 1906, follows a pattern of clear separation between residential areas, crafts, trade and culture, which distinguishes it from the backyards of the 19th century. Acceptable but last choice
This is a clean, respectable "superior tourist class hotel", in a completely renovated building. The rooms are small but attractive (our bed was barely the width a U.S. "double" bed, for two people), with everything nearly new. You must note that the hotel does not have air conditioning. This might be okay in all but the hottest weeks of the tourist season. But the street under the front rooms not only has a streetcar, it's near a curve. (..screeech...) If you have to have the window open, it's a real problem. Berlin has a lot of hotels, so make sure that the price for the days you need here is sufficiently below the hotels with larger rooms and air conditioning. The young staff is pleasant and helpful, but the hot weather encouraged us to pay for one night and leave immediately.
