The Hackesche Höfe is a notable courtyard complex situated adjacent to the Hackescher Markt in the centre of Berlin. The complex consists of eight interconnected courtyards, accessed through a main arched entrance at number 40 Rosenthaler Straße. The complex was designed in the Jugendstil (or Art Nouveau) style by August Endel, and the first courtyard is adorned with a magnificent facade of polychrome glazed brick. The construction of this project, launched in 1906, follows a pattern of clear separation between residential areas, crafts, trade and culture, which distinguishes it from the backyards of the 19th century.

If you have to have the window open, it's a real problem. Berlin has a lot of hotels, so make sure that the price for the days you need here is sufficiently below the hotels with larger rooms and air conditioning. The young staff is pleasant and helpful, but the hot weather encouraged us to pay for one night and leave immediately.

The ruins of this railway station, once Berlin's largest, and one of the biggest in Europe, would seem to be
a reminder of war damage this city sustained. In fact, the building was only partially destroyed during WWII, but ...
