Description

Located on Kollwitzplatz, Berlin's trendy gastronomic and nightlife hotspot, Gugelhof shot to fame when German Chancellor Schröder took US President Clinton out to dinner here. Although it has only been around since the mid 1990's, it is one of the most popular culinary institutions in town. The hot and hearty meals make this a particularly good place to come in the winter, but it is not recommended for calorie-counters. The summer terrace is perfect for a relaxing brunch. The evening menu includes classic dishes from the Swiss-French-German border region. Prices range from EUR3-EUR8 for breakfast to EUR15-EUR30 for a main course.

Rude and bad service

After the starter we gave up. The waiters attitude was so bad so we left after having had the starter. I warn against this overrated place. It is SO bad. Rude and arrogant staff. Bad food. Don't go in there.

Service is HORRIBLE

We were really excited to celebrate our anniversary. The service was horrible here. They offered an English menu to my husband who does not speak German and it took them over 45 min to bring one to the table. We had dinner and it took over 3 hours for them to deliver the meal. We are used to the service in Europe not being as customer orientated as in the US but this was ridiculous. We were even offered water but it never came! We didn't even ask for it. We will not be going back.

It was ok better then mcdonalds though

I liked how it had ok service and my food wasn't burned. I really liked the waiters they had they were very nice and they served us very soon and quick.

Won't go back

This popular, highly rated restaurant disappointed on food and service. We waited an hour for mains, table next to us was halfway through mains when last person was served. Pork flank steak with blood sausage stuffing was dry, despite question on dryness and firm assurances on order. Stick to Tarte Flambee if you go there.

WOW!!!

I just went to this restaurant and it was fantastic. We had scallops, snails in butter/curry sauce, tender lamb with polenta and the famous sausage & cabbage dish and everything was SO tasty! They also have homemade gourmet thin crust pizzas. Don't miss their signature frozen dessert cake with rasberry syrup...All this with drinks for 80 Euros. I would definately go back for more...

such a bad experience

We waited two hours for our food, that is quite too much! and the waiters were simply impertinent. Never again in that place. Maybe if you are a V.I.P you will be treated with more respect...

High value for your money! Nice welcoming and friendly staff! Interesting part of Berlin! Tasty and well made food! Nice outdoor seating in summer, fine inside too! dont hesitate Go!

Must Have Gone Downhill

Not anything worthn going out of your way for. Waited over 1 hr for main courses. Even though it wasn't so busy when we were there, service was slow and inattentive. Food was ok, but not good enough to justify the bad service or trip out. Looks like there are many better alternatives nearby in Prenzlauerberg. Our faves in Berlin are Aigner, Henne and Lutter & Wegner.

Alsatian food

The food is NOT Austrian, it's Alsatian. And although Alsace is now long in France, it has little in common with French cuisine. Be as it may: it's delicious. Perfect for a casual evening with friends or family (less for romatic dining).

Yum!!!

The best German food in Berlin!!!! I would go back to Berlin just for the food there. I was told German food is quite heavy with potatoes and sausages, but THIS IS NOT TRUE. If you want to discover what German food is all about, go there!! Not only the presentation is good, but they serve an amazing sauerkraut with the best sausages in town (awarded best sausages in 2002). My husband didn't want to have a "typical" German meal and ordered lamb. Just thinking of it, i'm salivating: the meat was melting, with lots of rich flavours in my mouth. The price is a bit high but worth every cent!
