Basilique du Sacré-Coeur

Description

This Romano-Byzantine basilica overlooks Montmartre, one of Paris' most picturesque districts. Its distinctive dome rising up over the rooftops, the basilica offers the perfect vantage point from which to survey the city. Inside, the mosaic of Christ and the crypt are of particular interest. Commissioned by the Catholic Church, construction began in 1875 under the watchful eye of architect Paul Abadie and was finally completed in 1914.

So Beautiful
By Rachel, 3/22/10
Sacre-Coeur is one of the most beautiful places I have every seen. I recommend that everyone go here once in their lives. There are ALOT of stairs walking up to it, but it is so worth it. Then, to go behind the church and explore Montmartre is great. The locals are different, but so what, they think we are different too! Be aware of pick-pocketers, though. Overall its GREAT!!!

i cried at the sight of the effiel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/17/09
i was walking through the moulin rouge and this guy was almost forcing me in one of the clubs. i wanted to lose this guy and i walked down an alley and found the stairway to heaven(my own words), my legs aching from my travels and the stairs, i found the look-out at the coeur. i watched the effiel at the exact moment of it's last show of the night, at city of lights. i cried at the sight. the effiel sparkled for ten, twenty seconds. it was the most beautiful experience. .............................dirty yo,place the trash

Beautiful Church
By motorcitykitty, 3/30/08
This was a wonderful and amazing experience. Walked into the church right as mass was being said. So I was able to attend mass and recieve communion. At the end of the service a screen at the front of the alter slid up and there were two angels reaching to the heavens. It was so wonderful. I highly recommend going inside and looking around this church and the view from the front of the church word's can explain.

The Most Beautiful at Night
By magzulieh, 12/28/07
Sacre-Coeur is well worth the hundreds of steps. At night it is looming and breath taking. You can see the whole "City of Lights" with a view that is matched only by the Eiffel Tower or the Millienium Wheel. Many people hang out on the steps where you can hear a band play or some other form of free entertainment. Bring a bottle of wine and take your time.

Magnificent place in Paris
By Elsa, 11/25/07
Try to come here before sunset, it is amazing. The view of Paris down there and the color of the sky are unforgetable. We also enjoyed the Place du Tertre. The place is great with its piqturesque surrounding.

Spiritual magnificence
By JanetM, 11/24/07
I could spend HOURS looking at every nook and cranny of Sacre-Coeur. I particularly enjoyed those who were there for worship purposes rather than touring. Their devotions added to the spirituality, the presence of God, the enveloping peace.

My Fav. Place in Paris
By Quique, 10/13/07
You can climb up the many stairs or take the trolley right up the hill. However, whatever you decided this place is Amazing. Once you get tot he top you can get a clear view of the City of Paris. Music plays and people are all over the place enjoying the sight of this Basilica. At night you can see people drinking wine from the bottle and conversing while looking at the city lit. Very romantic indeed...

I loved it too.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/10/07
The ride on the metro, the walking through the neighbourhood, then up the loooong hill to the basilica; drinking in the atmosphere inside the basilica; enjoying the view of Paris from the front steps. Awesome. The glass of wine at the cafe down on the corner was kinda nice too. Run by a nice English fellow.
