Tomb of Napoleon
Description
Napoléon Bonaparte died in exile on the Isle of St. Helena in 1821. In 1840 his remains were returned to France and a magnificent memorial was built between 1843-53 that now serves as his final resting place. Visitors can observe the giant sarcophagus. The layout has a total of five gigantic blocks. Along the walls is etched a chronicle of Napoleon's victories that add counter-point to the grandeur of the vault. Napoleon's Tomb sets in Les Invalides that was built by Louis XIV originally as a hospital for injured soldiers. On the grounds is also the Musée de l'Armée, the French war museum.
We went with a big group of high school kids from USA they were blown away at the detail and the fact Napoleon was buried in 6 different tombs each one larger than the other. We do not have this kind of history in the USA we have lot of other great things but this is a site for kids to see, do it. It's not a long tour and when we went it was not crowded.
How awesome to be in the tomb of one of history's greatest legends! It was an awesome visit..the tomb was elegant and opulent, and just knowing the history of this remarkable man made the visit so much more meaningful. I'd go back again!
