Caveau de la Huchette (Le)
This caveau is one of the most popular entertainment places in Paris. Located near the University of La Sorbonne, the place has been the dance paradise of generations of students and other visitors for more than 50 years. The most famous and prestigious American and European jazzmen have played here, including Maxim Saury. On two floors, happy tourists and students dance until the next morning.
My brother and I happened on this delightful jazz club and went back 3 or 4 nights, staying until it closed. The atmosphere is just dense with every imagined image of Paris nightlife from the post war years. Basement club, cavernous, yet cozy setting, live jazz, dancing, and the Parisiennes dancing up a storm. We just loved it and it became our favorite haunt late at night.
My husband (Gil) and I (Carrie) were in Paris, France, @ the Caveau de la Huchette, every night from 9/21 - 9/26, 2004. We had an absolutely, marvelous time. We danced till the wee hours of the morning and truly enjoyed the live entertainment, the band was great featuring Ted Curson on trumpet!! We can't wait to return, the owner was very warm and friendly as well as his family.
We went here in 2000 and it was spectacular.! The bartender chews on hand-rolled cigars..there are cartoons about him all over the bar. He's been there forever. The dancing downstairs was extraordinary and my husband ended up playing bass with a jazz trio. Wonderful!
I was in Paris for a few days on winter 2006. While walking alone the streets at a cold night, I ran into this mysterious place. The sign read "live swing" and I couldn't beleive how lucky I was, since I am a great swing fan. I entered the bar and I could hear music being played but I couldn't figure out where it came from. Finally, I walked down the narrow stairs of this ancient building and found myself in front of a scene I couldn't imagine in my craziest dreams: A whole big band was swinging wildly in this tiny place with the amazing atmosphere. Couples of all ages were jiving to the rhythm and they knew how to do it well. In this "cave" I had one of the best nights of my life.
A Parisian artist who paints jazz musicians for a living suggested I visit Caveau de la Huchette, and I'll never forget the two evenings I spent there!!!
I've never experienced anything like it and can't imagine I ever will again. The place was jumping with all ages swinging on the dance floor to the best live jazz I've heard. It didn't matter that I was there on my own, I spoke German, English and a tiny bit of French to everyone I met - you couldn't wipe the smile off my face! Go there if you ever get the chance, especially if you're a lover of jazz. The place is wild!
