"Everything that comes from the sea" was the motto of this restaurant, opened in 1872 by Alfred Prunier. Today, Jean-Claude Goumard buys his products directly from small chartered boats and night fishermen. Despite its rather high prices, his restaurant remains one of the most popular in Paris. Try the grilled/poached Breton lobster, or line-caught bass with pan-roasted vegetables à la Sicilienne. Splendid cellar with a choice of 170 champagnes. Expect to spend EUR60-EUR90 dining à la carte. A set menu will cost you around EUR60.
I stumbled upon the restaurant and was invited in by a waiter lingering by the door as they were opening. At first, I was charmed by the waiter - taking me on a tour of the restaurant and introducing me to other staff and management. Then when my male friend arrived the waiter became rude and awkward. He overcharged me for single king crab leg (that was delicious) that was supposed to be 16 Euro but turned out to be 38 Euro. Then when we went to pay with our Visa, we were told that his credit card machine would not accept it and essentially forced my friend to take a trip to the nearest ATM.
Between the two of us, we didn't want to cause a ruckus about the bill or the strange behavior being in a foreign city and overtired from a long day of sightseeing, but for a place that touts regulars such as Madonna and Johnny Depp I would have expected a different kind of service. Being close to the Champs-Elysees I would assume that the discrimination and mistreatment of American tourists would be minimal, but that was not apparent at this restaurant.
I would not support patronage of an establishment that is posh enough to accommodate famous Americans but uses that notoriety to swindle tourists.
If you go to paris - go to this restuarant! It's expensive - what isn't in the city of lights? - but afterwards, you will feel like you been to a world class restaurant - and you will NEVER again be intimated by any restuarant EVER - because you have been to the mother of intimadating restaurants!
