With a list of former regulars that includes Man Ray, Aragon, Picasso and Hemingway, this brasserie has become a Parisian institution. With seating for 450, the dining room is France's biggest. Its decor may have lost some of its sparkle, but the original art deco style, cubist tiling and fresco-covered pillars remain unchanged. Traditional brasserie fare is the order of the day: seafood, Steak Tartare, Cassoulet (meat and bean casserole) and a Meat Curry too.
I first ate at La Coupole in 1956 - taken by my parents who had dined there on their honeymoon in 1933. I have repeated the experience many time since (last visit Sept15 2007.) One of the few places I know that never changes and never disappoints.
At first I was a little daunted about the resturant a bit above me, but you have to get into it to experience it. Like all of Paris you have to live it not be a tourist expecting everything to happen for you.
I think that you have to try to speak the language not expect them to change. The food was good , the staff attentive what ever level, when a bithday cake was produced for a customer the lights were dimmed and the staff sang happy birthday. You can go in wearing a suit or jeans it is you that is served not what you look like, Take it all in your stride like the rest of Paris
The food is great. We order oyster/ sea food plate and white wine. All are excellent and better than my expectation.
The waitress are nice and helpful. They are very patience to explain the menu to us and help us to choose because we don't read and speak French
It is a very big restaurant. So when in its peak hours, it is not easy to get someone to serve you well. This is a little draw back.
If you are planning to visit this restaurant, I will recomend you to go there before 7:00 pm
I couldn't wait to get to this restaurant when we visited Paris, and it totally lived up to my expectations. Our hotel was in Montparnasse, so we could walk there and back. I had the best salmon of my life, and they even went out of their way for my veggie boyfriend. We had a glass of wine at the bar while we waited a short while for our table. The place was packed. My French is limited, but they absolutely insisted that I speak French, so I did the best I could -- which I think is only fair. The atmosphere and history just can't be beat. I did notice three other Americans there, but otherwise I was eating a very late dinner with a room completely full of Parisians. It was awesome. No more expensive than a typical big city restaurant here, and worth every Euro.
We recently made our second visit to this restaurant and left before we ordered. in our first visit two years ago, there were menus translated to English. This time the waiter became very nasty and insulting when we asked for a menu in English. There are many great restaurants in Paris that do not mind serving English speaking guests. Skip La Coupole.
I have always liked La Coupole -- have been there four times over the last twenty years. A few years back when I took a friend for a late supper, Jim Belushi and Jane Curtin were at the next table. We all got pleasantly drunk on some very good chablis.
Introduced to La Coupole by some French friends who love it. Was recently refurbished at great cost to preserve the wonderful paintings on the sixteen pillars throughout the great room. Great atmosphere and people watching. Went at lunch and had the 30 Euro menu, appetizer (gaspacho to die for), tartare of dorade (excellent) and outstanding desserts. Service was slow but to be expected as no one is in a rush when dining in France. A piece of social history- visited by all the great writers and artists of pre-WW2 and post WW2 era- soak up the atmosphere!
The atmosphere was great, the food was good, teh service was superb and the staff very friendly. Did not have to wait too long for a table on most recent visit (went there Jan 1) and the rpevious reviews about price seem a bit unfair; you only get what you pay for and you are paying for a very good restaurant. There did not seem to be very many tourists. I have been here three times or so and have never been disappointed. One warning, there are no reservations so NY Eve can be a challenge if you want to see it in there. We go there are 8.30pm and would not have been able to get in until 11pm at the earliest.
