Chez Paul

Description

La Bastille used to be the area where furniture was made, and cabinet-makers, joiners, and other artisans were regular patrons of this traditional bistro. Today, the atmosphere remains homely (gingham tablecloths on the tables) and the restaurant is so full, it's ready to burst. Salad with warm goat's cheese, beef with Bearnaise sauce, Gratin Dauphinois and homemade desserts are just some of the unpretentious dishes on offer. You are expected to pay EUR27-EUR34 ordering a la carte.

Stay away!
By ,
Bad food. stay away from this place. we had the most awful experience. we hardly touched the food, it was over cooked (steak fillet), or under cooked (le poulet). we set outside with a view to an old truck.

Best meal in Maui
By ,
We were lucky. Were driving when I caught sight of the restaurant out of the corner of my eye. Although born in Britain, and living in the United States, I am somewhat of a Francophile, having visited France and especially Paris many times. We turned around and checked out the menu hanging up outside. That was more than enough for me, so we went back later that night. The outside is deceiving. The inside was beautiful, clean and inviting. Got seated fast and plenty of time to check out the menu. Only took me seconds to choose the Onion Soup and Duck. The soup was the best I've ever had, the onions so sweet, and the duck was all meat, no fat. However, when the waiter asked me was everything alright, I had to point out there was one thing that was ruining it for us...the overhead music. Never have I been to a French restaurant to listen to elevator music! The waiter said he had to agree. Thinking about it, I realized I had a cd in the car by Manhattan Transfer. On that disc is one of my all time favorites called 'Je voulai t'adire que je t'attends'. I asked him if he would play it, wish he willing did. We ended up hearing the whole disc, one of the other waiters walking through the restaurant singing to it! Found out our waiter was Mark, and the singing waiter was Mike. There was another waiter there called Tony. We talked about the music. I was shocked to find out none of them had heard of the great French chantreuse, Edit Piaf. I told them about her. Having left the restaurant exceptionally happy, the following day we bought an Edith Piaf cd which I need to send them. Next time in HI, Chez Paul is a definite port of call on our trip. Intend to return with some family and friends and I can't think of a better place to take them!! It was the best meal we had in Maui...so well done, guys...keep it up, bon chance!! With very fond memories, Tony

We visited 5 nights in a row¬
By ,
On our first night in Paris we stumbled across this place - it looks like somones front room! We came back 5 nights in a row! I think the staff thought we were a little crazy. You cannot go wrong with anything from the menu - portion size is perfect, so much choice - the atmosphere is relaxed & informal. We arrived one evening at 7.30pm & didn't leave until 12 midnight but we were never rushed or hunted out of there! Try the steak au poivre with the gratin dauphinoise. We're Irish & we tell all our friends how nice the potatoes are there - that's some compliment as we Irish love our potatoes!!

Feels like grandmother's
Great ambiance and friendly staff, despite the hectic circumstances. The place is really crowded night after night, reservation is recommended. The main course we had was a bit disappointing though (overcooked entrecote), but the atmosphere makes it worth anyway. Admire the matronne, live as well as her beautiful big picture on the wall upstairs. I would definitely recommend the place, but advise to take another main course than I did.

I love this joint
By ,
This rerstaurant is a step back in time. The food is wonderful, even by French standards, and the service very good. The place isn't stuffy or formal, though. Personally, I prefer going here for lunch. eating the big meal in the afternoon is tradition, rather than at night, and the food seems geard toward that. Rabbit in goat cheese and mint is to die for.

Best little corner of Paris!
By ,
This was the best little restaurant I ever found while I was living in Paris. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is superb, really cosy, and what one feels should be the real small Parisian restaurant experience. The service is not fast, don't expect it to be, enjoy the wine, relax, and when the food arrives it will always impress. Somehow the place still manages to feel like it's your special secret find, even though it's always busy, and that you shouldn't tell everyone. Can't wait to go back on my next visit to Paris!
