The Côte d'Azur is renowned the world over for the quality of the essential oils and perfumes produced here. Today, Galimard remains one of its most famous perfumers. Created in 1747 by Jean de Galimard (who, incidentally, was a very good friend of Goethe), the perfumerie supplied the nobility with olive oils, ointments and perfumes. Take the interesting guided tour around the laboratories, where the various processes of extraction used (pressing, soaking and distillation techniques) are revealed. This free visit lasts for about twenty minutes - during which you'll even be invited to create your own perfume! This place is often overrun with busloads of tourists.
Grasse was a beautiful village. When you are in Cannes, I would highly recommend that you take the time to visit Grasse. While you are there, visit the Galimard factory. One of the best things I did on my vacation was creating my own "scent" at their shop. What woman wouldn't love to have her own distinct fragrance? My creation is something I will reorder for the rest of my life. It is pricey, but worth it.
