Musee National Message Biblique Marc-Chagall
Marc Chagall is famous for his works inspired by Jewish folklore, and this museum reveals a deeply mystical poet in him. Chagall was born in Russia in 1887 and died near Nice at St Paul-de-Vence in 1985. His interpretations of the Bible are presented on vast canvasses, blending candid forms with a poetry of colors. This bright and spacious museum boasts of the finest of his works. At the entrance, a small bookshop stocks a number of publications about Chagall and his art, as well as prints of his work. I was not a Chagall fan until I saw this museum--first in 1980. Since the museum was designed as "The Biblical Museum of Marc Chagall" the work is nearly all based on Biblical themes. One room designed like a small chapel chronicles Chagall's life with and tribute to his wife. The work differs from Chagall's earlier, more surreal works. Be sure to see the stained glass in the theater area. Color and large scale, very friendly atmosphere and nice location make for an enjoyable visit.
If you like Marc Chagall, you will love this intimate museum, where there is a wonderful display of his works. It is not at all overwhelming, as are many other museums, and the art is so accessible, you can go right up to it. The setting is also lovely, way up in the hills of Nice. A must-see for any visit to Nice by art lovers.
We felt that the works displayed left the impression that the artist was a bit nuts. Most of the pieces were of his obsession with Moses and the Bible. The images seemed drawn with less than a full effort at artistic beauty. Go to the Picasso museum instead.
A wonderful collection of Chagall's works, that is well-organized, and doesn't overwhelm like many of the huge museums. The museum is also situated in a beautiful setting, making it all the better to visit.
