Grand Cafe de Turin

Description

Situated in attractive Place Garibaldi where it's been since the 1950s, this is one of the city's most authentic cafe-bars. Featuring a superb terrace and delightful archways, it serves wonderful seafood all day (even at breakfast), and shellfish are always fresh. Reservations are not accepted, and the cafe is often full by 7p, best to arrive early. Specialties of the house include Scampi Salad with roasted asparagus and parmesan, and a Sea Bream Socca with small vegetables; four-course menus begin at around EUR30.

Last week updates
By Dragulanescu, 6/21/10
I use to go from time to time for dinner in this restaurant and, usually, everything went well...except, last Friday. You can call it black Friday or so...service was really bad: waiters had a bad attitude, something you can offer as a negative example in marketing cases (how to not act with customers). I strongly suggest you to think twice before going to this restaurant and try to get an immediate feedback concerning your order, or, you might get something you didn't asked for (or nothing at all as I have experienced on 18th of June 2010).

A Must go!
By Raffaele Sena, 5/4/09
Fish was extraordinary (we had oysters and crabs). Quality/price was ok, considering that it's in the south of France. Overall a great place for fresh fish!

Good food, terrible service
By Fiona, 6/9/06
I liked the food very much. It was very fresh. I did not like the way the customers are treated. The french staff only speaks to you in french (even if it is clear that they understand perfectly english and italian) and treats every body with arrogance. My partner and I went to have dinner at 10 PM of friday June 2nd 2006. We where seated outside because, inside it was full. After waiting 20 minutes for the staff to collect our orders, the inside room had emptied and we asked to be mooved inside. The reply was that they still had to clean up the table. When we pointed out that the table was already cleaned they completley ignored us. They said that the bread was finished but the french couple sitting near by us was served bread. I really enjoyed the food but the service was so bad I do not consider going back.

Fun, with a big F
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/15/05
I have rated it as a cafe, which it is, albeit a pricy one, and not an upmarket restaurant, which it does not pretend to be. The shellfish on my "plat de fruits de mer" were excellent, fresh tasting and plentiful. All the tools required for shellfish eating were automatically provided, this makes for an easier life. My pidgin French seemed to work adequately with the staff. After all we are in France, we have to expect to at least try to speak some French. We found the waiters positively helpful. I opted for the lowest cost wine, Muscadet de Sevre et Maine, and, again, no complaints. Am I too easy to please? The romantic exploits at adjacent tables were fascinating. One straight, with oysters and Champagne and a lovely young lady. One gay with one Northern European male who eyed up every other male within 20m, except me, was I too old or too ugly. Whichever, that suited both my wife and I. All in all, I have not had as much dining fun in years and would thoroughly recommend a visit. Get there early, we arrived at 18:30 and tables were plentiful, but by 19:30 a queue was forming . It fills up fast. Go on, have FUN, enjoy yourself.

Good raw bar, but.....
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/22/05
I have been there a few times. Always packed with locals and tourists. If you miss eating fresh raw seafood, go fo it. It is very fresh but in terms of quality? I think it's average. Don"t expect to recieve good service, if you don"t speak french.

Nice in Nice
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/26/04
It's a must when you visit Nice. A good location combined with a really full selection of for example shellfishs of the season. Service is good. If you want to mix with the locals choose a table inside (if there is any available).

Simply Flawless
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/15/04
This is the best sea food bar I have ever been. The prawns and the lobster was simply amazing. It is a pitty that is not situated in Liverpool as I don't think I'll be going to Nice again. The staff were great and tried to comunicate with me as best as possible in English. Well done Guys!!
