Comptoir (Le), Nice

We discovered Le Comptoir quite by accident as we picked a random street to walk town at dinner time. It was a fortuitous discovery, though, as it was our best dinner of the week. They seem to specialize in la cuisine niçoise but there was plenty of French cuisine, too. We had some of each. Their tapenade was the best I've had and our entrees and plats were excellent, too. The service was especially good. My wife had taken a liking to beaujolais nouveau and when I asked if it was available by the glass they said normally no but that they would opena bottle and sell it by the glass. The waitress was adorable and helped us learn a lot about the local cuisine. She spoke no English but was very good at judging my French because every time she used vocabulary I didn't understand she immediately restated using simpler vocabulary. The only reason I didn't rate them five stars is that the maitre d'hotel gave me an English menu when he seated us, an absolute no-no in my book, but perhaps you'll be pleased by that. However, after I got a French menu I found that there were some minor differences between the English and French versions.
