As the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood has continued to become gentrified over the last decade or so, sleek new places like Eatery have continued to open. This restaurant serves up tasty New American food in a downtown setting, which appeals to locals looking for a hip dining experience in their own neighborhood. The decor is minimalist, with bare walls and dark green booths. The affordable menu offers such diverse choices as Macaroni and Cheese Topped with Onion Rings, and Wild Mushroom Pierogies. Eatery also has a fantastically priced daily lunch menu.
I live nearby and everytime I passed by it was crowded, and it looked like a nice place to visit, so one time I took my chance and got a table outside.
I have to say the service was excellent and kind.
I ordered the pork tenderloin marinated in apple with tamarind sauce. Sounds great but the meat was dry and tasteless. The garnish was good, though (potatoes).
So I was very disapointed, I wouldn't go back.
Eatery is one of those places that makes non-New Yorkers feel like they actually live in Manhattan. The trendy atmosphere and comfort food make it seem as though you are in your favorite local cafe when, in reality, you may live far away. I eat there every time I got to NYC!
Bad Food & Tragically Hip. We ate there six months ago and had a bad experience, but decided to give it another chance. This time it was even worse! We live in the neighborhood and will never go back. I had the e-benne (their version of Eggs Benedict) and my friend had the Cheddar Bacon Omelet. The e-benne was the better of the two, but that's not saying much. At least the e-benne was totally flavorless, and that
Eatery has the best macaroni and cheese on earth. Deep fried onions top an exterior layer of melted cheese. Under the upper layers sits a gooey mixture of short noodles and a cheese sauce packed with butter. Served piping hot in a bowl of giant proportions, you're guaranteed to leave full. YUM! Only complaint: the music was a tad loud.
Small portions and the food in terms of flavor was quite average. Margaritas were awful - no flavor at all and they don't come cheap. Atmosphere is cool but the food is very mediocre and the service was very average. In a nutshell, there are a million other great restaurants in the city with much better food for a lot less mullah and better service!
