This has been called the most splendid market square in Europe. Its esplanade is completely enclosed by tall, gabled, Flemish Renaissance buildings dripping with ornamentation and statues. It is alive with daily commerce and a colorful flower market. Impressive as it is by day, it is even more beautiful at night in the golden glow of floodlights. During Spring and Summer evenings there is a light show that shouldn't be missed.
It was a dream come true. It is like nothing I have ever witness before. I was there with someone I had met for the first time.
The feeling of being there with the Colonel was far beyond words. It was an absolute dream for me. The buildings all held their own stories that maked me want to whisper about their beauty and the feeling of being closed in with a man I so much admire, makes me want to blush even now. It's certainly a place I will look back on and smile on my darkest days. When I am alone on stormy nights and need to excape some place that holds much romance, of upper class Society life, loud merchants and I imagine, a meeting place for "forbidden love", I will close my eyes and find my way back to Brussels. My day with the Colonel will live on forever. I have traveled a lot but the Grand Place was the best of them all.
I like the place though it is almost crowded everyday, you can find chocolates which is the specialty of Belgian. Nothing to worry if you are hungry and thirsty there are restaurants around the place. And alot of interesting things to see.
It is really a stunning square. Like no other. If you like architecture and grandeur, it is worth the trip to Brussels just to see the Grote Markt/Grand Place. Additionally, the people in Brussels are fantastic.
On July 2000, I and my family went to Brussels and visited Grote Markt. This charming old architectural place was full with visitors.
Last January 2006, during winter time (mind you, I come from a tropical country) we went back to Grote Markt. Although the place was different-- more quite, colder of course, and the stone pavement wasn't full with street vendors, but the place was still familiar.
When the night fell and all the lamplights start to shine, the place was magnificent, stunning and made a beautiful postcard quality photograph.
The small shops was worth the visit. And the food was excellent, especially the mussels and brussels shrimp qroquette
