we arrived late in Salzburg having decided to go there on the spur of the moment. our hotel receptionist directed us to Julienstrasse when we asked where to get something to eat so late. Steirische Weinstuben looked like a typical corner pub in Australia and has typical locals at the bar. Its decor is unremarkable but quirky. the food and wine were so good we went back on our second night in Salzburg. we tried the specials offered on the blackboard at the front door and some from the speisekarte. service was welcoming and friendly for we who had very little german language skills. help with the wines selection was also welcome and a great introduction to Austrian wines. food and drink were excellent value and serves generous. of special mention is the 'steirische wurzelfleisch', a piece of pork shoulder poached in aromatic vegetables and served with plain boiled potatoes, paoching veg and a thick shower of freshly grated horseradish - absolutley sublime in its purity and cleanliness of flavour. a warning for the uninitiated, horseradish makes the eyes water.
highly recommended for a taste and a feel for Austrian food, wine and people.
