The volcano is some distance from San Jose, but it is worth the trip to visit one of Central America's most impressive volcanoes. In the night, the view is awe-inspiring thanks to the red-hot rocks that the volcano spews into the air. You can stay in the village, Fortuna, to take advantage of the night views, or take a day trip from the capital to visit the Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal.

i was there for only 2 hr/s ,the drive from the airport to the hotel in that little red cab gave me a slip disk, so i had to return to the states because theres no doctors there to treet you unless you pay them cash, and i will not pay them for the damage they did to me-

Pura Vida

Beautiful place with amazing people. Sites are amazing and the hiking is refreshing. Listen and you can hear the mountain. Stay as close to the top as you can and you'll enjoy your stay more. Go to Montiverde after leaving Arenal.

great tour
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/02/08
In January I was 3 days in the Arenal area. This place definitely should be on your To-Do list for Costa Rica. Our trip was an organized tour from the travel agency Expediciones Tropicales. Our tour guide picked us up from our hotel in San Jose and drove on to La Fortuna. In the afternoon we visited Baldi Hot Springs. There we could relax in twenty swimming pools filled with thermal water and different water temperatures. That was a real relaxing experience. We had a lot of luck with the weather by day. There were only a few clouds which didn’t hide the volcano. So we could enjoy a beautiful view of the Arenal volcano. Unfortunately at night it was badly clouded so that we couldn’t see from our hotel the lava flow. Therefore we took a taxi which drove us to the other side of the volcano. There we could see the fascinating spectacle despite the clouds. It was really amazing! We stayed at Arenal Volcano Inn. I can highly recommend this hotel. The hotel complex is really beautiful, has an excellent Italian restaurant and the bungalows are lovely and well appointed. The city La Fortuna is very nice. You can find there a lot of other hotels, restaurants and shops. But also many travel agencies where you can book local tours. I can recommend a horseback riding tour to the volcano. That was an impressive excursion. There are also many other possibilities to arrange your leisure time. So enjoy your time there!

Spectacular Lava Views & Fun!
By ncmysteryshopper, 03/03/08
We loved Arenal and had a wonderful time in Fortuna. We stayed at Los Lagos and had views of the volcano and lava flow from our rooms. The volcano was covered with clouds the first day we were there (Feb 18-21, 2008) but they cleared by the second day. Baldi was nice and the canopy and horseback riding tours at Los Lagos gave some great views along with a fabulous adventure! I am glad we visited Arenal.... we enjoyed it far more then Poas... but less then Montezuma.

great times

The hotel we choose was wonderfully located at the base of the Volcano. A short drive to the Park at night time gave us a romantic and beauiful memory of the power within a volcano.

Once in a lifetime experience
By TimothyH, 12/25/07
I was able to get down to Costa Rica in October as part of a group of students. Arenal is amazing, especially if you can see it at night (on the active side...on the other side from La Fortuna). You can actually see molten rocks cascading down the mountainside and breaking into more and more rocks...amazing! The hot springs are great around there too, I would definitely recommend Baldi Hot Springs, about 20-30 pools of varying temps. Loved it, and can't wait to go back!

It was a great experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/31/07
We went there several years ago with my 10 year old and he enjoyed it also. We stayed at a motel across from Arenal and it was awsome. The people were great and friendly. I can't think of a thing that we disliked. Prices were also reasonable. We visited the waterfall and ate at several different inns and were surrounded by butterflies and hummingbirds.

don't be fooled
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/25/07
ok dont be fooled by these crazy people the place was not that great...ok there were some really god trails...but the stores price things in the American Dollar, the volcano is always cloudy at the top unless you manage to go on a good day which is about two weeks a year...everything is way to over priced...if you must go then dont expect much and you will have a lot more fun..other then that Costa Rica is my favorite country to visit....go to Nicaragua while you are there...go to Granada its worth it.
