Parque Nacional Volcán Poás

Description

This national park is very popular among Costa Ricans and tourists for its amazing views of, and from, the volcano. Volcán Poás is active, and it releases sulphuric gases from its crater. Visitors to the park enjoy hiking along the trails to the mountain and lake. There is also a Visitor's Center with educational displays and a coffee shop. There are regular connections from San Jose to the park. For more information, please contact the local bus terminals.

What a lucky guy I am.
By ,
I liked that the heavy cloud bank lifted for about 10 to 15 minutes so that I could see the crater. What I disliked was the sulfur fumes and the hike up hill. It would have been a severe bummer if I paid the park entrance, hiked up to the rim, only to be in a thick cloud of sulfurous gas.

Truely Amazing!
By ,
It mat not look like your average volcanoe, but it is just as amazing. What makes it even better is that about a mile walk away, there is a Beautiful teal water lagoon sorrounded by a forest of trees. These to sites are spectacular and worth taking the trip to see.

I must take my other family members

I liked how you could get close and look down into the crater. Good photo opp. Botos lagoon is worth the 30 minute walk. Excellent and worth the trip. Be sure to stop and enjoy the local food on the way down

Fun and a beautiful view
By ,
The view was great, the weather while we were there was perfect. A couple people in the group had a hard time breathing on the hike up due to the elevation and amount of particles in the air.

This is a volcano?
By ,
Poas is not like any other volcano I had ever heard about or seen. It is a sulpher volcano. I didn't even know they had those before this trip. Poas is a beautiful volcano. The water in the middle is an incredible shade of blue and the land around it is desolate. I could even see the part of the volcano that was discolored by the sulpher. We were lucky that the clouds parted while we there and we got an perfect view of the volcano. Unfortunately that doesn't always happen. It is also a little cool and misty, sometimes rainy there. So bringing a jacket is a good idea. I definately think it is worth the time and money, even if you don't get a perfect view of it.

Poas
By ,
I really like Poas. Arenal is certainly better, but you can't beat it as a day trip from San Jose. I especially think that families with young children will like it because it is fairly well marked and protected.
