Description

More, much more than a Chinese restaurant, this is a culinary experience of different tastes and flavors from all of Asia. Here, you can try specialties from India, Indonesia, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Japan and, of course, China. It is not unusual, then, that a mixture of smells comes from the kitchen including curry, ginger, soy, lemon grass, garlic and onions, in a parade of magical olfactory seduction. When you feel it is time for a gastronomic change, the Tin Jo can give you a marvelous culinary tour through those exotic places.

pricey n not that great!
Not the best, but the most expensive chinese food I have tasted. Nice place, but way over priced. I prefer Royal City in Curridabat, speaking of which FUSIO is a really nice inexpensive spot for dinner and just a nice night out on the town in Curridabat... Not far from San Jose Centro - downtown.

A staple in our dining out circuit in San Jose
By ,
My husband and I go to Tin Jo frequently when we are in San Jose. Restauranteurs ourselves living in Guanacaste, we appreciate a good meal with good service when we can find it. Tin Jo has an extensive menu covering a lot of basics from several Asian countries. While one might find better Indian food in an Indian restaurant, or better sushi in a Japanese restaurant, we love the broader spectrum of menu items available to us at Tin Jo. The Thai dishes are outstanding, and as yet unmatched in San Jose, and I've yet to see Malaysian food elsewhere either. The service is always excellent, though we have often had to wait for our check at the end, this is pretty common in most restaurants in the country and has more to do with a difference in culture than poor service. Perhaps some people are better off sticking to Chinese fast food takeaway in their own neighbourhoods than being disappointed by the "weird" food offered here.

East meets West

A true Chinese family institution that has built upon the experineces of the younger generation in making this a fine voyage in Chinese and South Eastern fare. The traditonal Chinese favors are still there but an infusion of Indian can be found if you wish to try something different. Don't let the outside turn you off as inside it is paradise.

Overrated

My wife and I recently moved to Costa Rica's central valley and were excited to try Tin Jo after reading all the positive reviews in the guidebooks. While we found the food and service at Tin Jo's adequate, it was not up to the level we expected. We may give Tin Jo's another try, but at this point we would not recommend it to our friends and family. A great alternative to Tin Jo is "Royal City" located in Curridabat, across the street from the Indoor Club on Avenida Central. It serves great food at very reasonable prices. Royal City is a short cab ride from downtown San Jose (the ride should cost under 3000 colones).

I'll never go back

I have eaten at Tin Jo and I have found that they serve the most expensive rice I have ever eaten at a Chinese retayrant. The food is double the price for excellent Chinese food in the USA. The egg rolls are terrible as is the soup. If you want good Chines food, don't get it at Tin Jo!!!!

Tin Jo Ho Hum
By ,
First, I am not comparing this to a NYC style sit down Chinese food restaurant, but, having said that, here are the reasons for my poor ratings: 1. The food was pallatable...not great, but not bad either. 2. Service leaves a lot to be desired...we needed to ask four different waiters/staff to refill our water glasses...on three different occasions. 3. They got one item on our order of 4 items wrong and were indignant when we asked them to take it back and make it correct. 4. In the end, they tried to sneak in the wrong item on to our bill hoping that we wouldn't notice it... 5. It took forever to get our bill and get out of there....and there were only 20 persons eating there... 6. Ambiance however was impeccable and the place was very clean! So, we are on the fence on this one..

Good every time
By ,
I've been to Tin Jo four times, ordered something different every time, and every time it has been simply delicious. try the shrimp pinapple curry... it's practically desert! Also, the table service is great, and atmosphere wonderful. Seriously, the best asian restaurant in San Jose, and really resonably priced for the quality of the food (this same food in a gringo hotel would easily cost twice as much). Oh, and why would these other reviewers compare a restaurant in a third-world country to what NYC has to offer? If everything has to measure up to New York, life is going to be wickedly disappointing. Better to just stay in New York.

Mediocre, pricey
By ,
The ambience is lovely, with different Asian decor for different areas. I got stuck in a Japenese modern room, very white, very cold. The "Japanese" food was so so. I will try something else next visit. Dinner for two with no alcohol, appetizers or desserts was $48.00, expensive for SJ. I'd rather go to Caf Mundo in Amon any day.
