Since its opening 39 years ago, this restaurant has been a culinary tradition in barbecued meats, which have made it into a landmark. Its owner, Mr. Roberto Perez, is of Spanish origin and has managed to maintain an excellent quality in the preparation, aging and cooking of his meats. The establishment features a very nice informal atmosphere, and there is a small verandah more appropriate for light snacks. You can make reservations directly from the Website.

Great neighborhood eatery

The restaurant is rather non-descript outside but once inside patrons are treated exceptionally nicely with a very professional wait staff in jackets and ties. The menu is extensive with fish,meat and poultry made in many different interesting and tasty ways, especially the many grilled dishes. Extensive wine selection. The fresh hearts of plam dishes are a must. These are very nice people who run the restaurant.

The Best In Costa Rica

I am a freguent business traveler to San Jose. El Chicote is the number one restaurant in Costa Rica. The Sea Bass El Chicote is the finest fish dish in Central America. The staff is keenly personable. The prices are exceptional. The Best of the Best.

Only meal in San Jose but worth it

The service was excellent and the food had great selections for our carnivore and vegetarian. We had a steak and yucca dish. The home made tortillas with garlic were strong but very good.

excellent food!!

My wife and I enjoyed the excellent food at this place last week. nice and cozy atmosphere. We were introduced to the owner and his wonderful wife and daughter. The lady was kind enough to send us off in the taxi and gave instructions to the driver to drop us at our hotel! The couple have been managing the restaurant for about 46 years!!

I liked El Chicote because it has a cozy atmosphere with a very nice wine selection and delicious food. The service is excellent and the staff will go out of their way to please! It is more of a Costa Rican "tico" environment than a tourist one.

The best steaks in town, excellent service, fresh seafood, salads, vegetarian options. The place is really nice, colonial style and huge grill where you can peek your meat being done. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

Visited the restaurant in April 2005. here were very few locals or tourists evident on a Wednesday evening. The service was excellent- management and staff were friendly to non-Spanish speakers. There was no trouble in ordering, or understanding the bill's total- they will give you the total in US dollars a wel as Colones. The service charge is generally included in many restaurant bills, but they don't mention it. In the States, a tip is generally added to parties of more than 4 or more. Very pleasant atmosphere.
