Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Description

With a history that dates 500 years, this stone structure truly deserves its place of honor in the National Historic Register. The English and the Dutch attacked El Morro or Castillo San Felipe del Morro repeatedly in its time. Located on the San Juan Bay , the six-story fort was originally constructed in 1540, although its exterior walls were not erected for another 200 years. Inside the walls is a veritable labyrinth of chambers, barracks, hallways and prison cells. The fort was given a complete facelift in 1992.

My family and I visited El Morro Easter Sunday... It was one the most amazing views I have EVER seen. Beautiful countryside right on the ocean. I have awesome pictures!

This was my first trip to the carribean. And I have to say the Puerto Rico was my favorite port. Just walking through the city and finding myself at El Morrow. I was in Awe. The cemetary was so very interesting. So many views to take georgous pictures. I had the best time ever possible.

The Culture and Heritage of the people
By Tony, 9/12/09
The Fort is magnificant and very interesting to anyone wanting to know more about the spanish and the heritage of the island and it's people.A must see ! I personally go there everytime I visit the island. the ocean views are breath takeing. You can walk from the fort to old San Juan and to the capital steps. The food of the island is wonderful and there are many fabulas resturants to choose from. Rent a car and see as much of the island as possible, from the rain forest to the wonderful beaches.

Awesome history
By Juan, 9/1/09
Walking through el Morro castle was an unreal experience, I literally got chills just looking at the old artifacts and realizing that 500 years ago there were people here going about their daily lives, as I just was. It was an amazing experience.

A must in Puerto Rico
By Cucey, 6/3/09
El morro is a must for tourists. I definitely liked the green field before El Morro. It was huge with a beautiful panoramic ocean view. Hundreds of people were relaxing and flying kites there. You can see the cemetery and lighthouse of El Morro. I would like to see more descriptions in El Morro, may be some depictions. But it's presence is more than thousand words for sure.

Good experience
By rubenl, 4/17/09
I like it because its unique and its really old. If you go to Puerto Rico, but if you don`t go to El Morro. It`s like going to Egypt and not seen the Piramids.

number #1 place to visit
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/16/08
San juan, puerto Rico is everything a person would dream of, you could call it a paradise. If you have the oppertunity to visit, then no doubt you should go. One of the great places to go with the family is El Yunke. This is a very popular rain forest, with many trails and water falls. The water falls are an excellent place for the kids. They will definately LOVE sitting under the water fall or even climbing the rocks. Another great thing that you wont want to miss is horse back riding along the side of the beach. A very relaxing trail ride will definately take the stress away! Also there are many festivals happening all the time! So bring your kids to a few of those or just go with your family! All this is definatley something you wont want to miss!

Great stop in San Juan
By SD2007, 8/13/08
This is a great place to visit, but you have to be able to say Oooohh and Aaaahh to great views, history, and nice architecture. Lots of stairs, so wear comfy shoes, and bring lots of water.

Must go there once in your lifetime!!!
By Gladys, 6/16/08
El morro is one of those places that you must see before you die. Must be one of the World's 7 Wonders. We went there and were fascinated. First we went during the morning to fly a kite in it's wonderful frontyard. Then we tooked the tour to see the inside and in the night we were on el Paseo de la Princesa. Absolutely, the most beautiful, romantic and history-learning placve that I have ever been into.
