Museo de Arte de Ponce
In Ponce , this gallery is by far the island's, and possibly the Caribbean's, most notable art spot. Its original collection was donated by local ponceño and former Governor of the island, the laureated Luis A. Ferre. The museum's offerings range from the finest local painters (Oller and Campeche), to fine classics like Lord Leighton's Flaming June. The collection spans 500 years, since the discovery of Puerto Rico, but the museum's array is truly international.
The pre-Raphaelite collection is magnificent. The Sleep of King Arthur by Burne-Jones will leave you speechless. No wonder it took him 17 years to paint it! The Museum's building has been totally renovated, great architecture with lots of light and green areas. A monumental sculpture by Roy Lichtenstein greets visitors at the entrance. Only drawbacks: small parking and no food or water available for purchase on premises. Definitely worth the drive (1 hr 15 min) from San Juan!
What a treat this was! Old San Juan is beautiful, there is no doubt about this. However, if you have some extra days, take a tour through the beautiful mountain range of the "Cordillera Central", reach Ponce and then go and visit the "Museo de Arte de Ponce" (MAP). You'll love it. And what a surprise it was for me to discover that they have a fantastic collection, hardly ever seen in major museums all over the world.
But...wait! After visiting and enjoying the museum, don't leave the city without going to pay a visit to the downtown area of Ponce. You'll enjoy the people and their distinct hospitality....
