Calle El Conde

Description

One of the oldest streets in Santo Domingo and still among the city's most popular commercial centers, this quaint pedestrian street extends from the Parque Colón to the Parque Independencia . It hosts a diverse variety of stores that include apparel and textile shops, shoe stores, restaurants and cafes, a hotel, gift shops and jewelry stores. Over time, this street has received several names, including Clavijo, Real and Separación. Its current name honors the Conde (Count) of Peñalba who defeated the English in the 17th century.

A great experience
By M. P, 3/20/08
A unique place to learn about the history of the Island of Hispanola, enjoy great shopping, and interactions with the locals. The many restaurants, ice-cream parlors, and outdoor vendors make this one of the must see places in Santo Domingo.

I lived in the Dominican for years and I still loved going here for the stuff you can not get anywhere else and for the cafe at the east end.

as a local I have the advantage to walk every day this little streets... I loved this street even do it is full of merchants now still a historical place, walk looking up and beyond the stores and see the beauty of the millenniums years old buildings and streets.... go inside the little corners and enjoy every step you take...so go ahead have a bite of patelitos and drink agua de coco. I use to enjoy every day my walks around mi vieja ciudad

Heartbeat of Santo Domingo
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/18/05
My friends and I decided to stay close to the city on a recent trip to Santo Domingo and lucked up on a hotel located directly on the El Conde. What became one of our favorite pass times was simple sitting on the restaraunt terrace wacthing the people. Let me be the first to tell you the women in Dominican Republic are absolutely beautiful! It sort of reminds me of a mix between New York City and Miami. If you're into beaches and resorts and stuff like that then maybe this area won't appeal to you, but if you're the nightlife type please do yourself a favor and hit the Calle El Conde.

A true original
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/8/04
Sights, smells and sounds... all walks of life in all types on condition... and being from NY I though I'd seen it all.

There's a fair share of beggars and such, as in every poor country, specially elders... but they don't bother as much... well guarded, eventhough Santo Domingo is a safe city, there are tourist policemen in every corner... be ready to bargain for prices, that's half the fun... actually the shopping is not what's so great, there's plenty of sophisticated shopping elsewhere in Santo Domingo, it's peeking into a culture, getting the pulse from a social artery second to none... just sitting in a small cafeteria drinking a great dominican coffee (forget Starbucks, this is the REAL DEAL) it's just awsome, almost hipnotic to watch the people and things that make you feel you're in some Fellini movie.

A big plus is that nearby there's the colonial city... it's more than what you see in a brochure... I was actually surprised, there are some amazing gothic churches carved out of coral stone, monuments, amazing houses, and a great nightlife... I'd only come to resorts in Punta Cana and Puerto Plata... but coming here is what really showed me what makes this unique country tick.... and it's all so cheap and near, it's a steal... a must see... El Conde gets my thumbs up.
