Established in 1990, the aim of Calypso Divers is to provide the widest range and highest quality diving instruction, along with personalized service and a friendly atmosphere. The main shop at Kata Beach is a PADI dive center that offers a full range of courses. Day dive trips comprise two or three dives, or try the unique overnight Phi Phi Islands special, with seven dives over a weekend. Live aboard cruises go to the Similan , Surin and Southern Islands, Riechlieu Rock and Burma. Charter vessels range from wooden motor-vessels to luxury sailing yachts.
Just came back last week (May 2009) and I would never recommend Calypso to any of my dive buddies, unless I have a vendetta.
Picked us up 25mins late from Kata Beach. Herded us plus luggage into a pick up truck (10 of us); we would expect at least a minivan. No briefing given when we were picked up as to our itinerary. Went on to pick up supplies from 2 locations, which were crammed into the truck together with us.
Reached the pier, but were told to wait in the truck (which was getting real hot). Finally told us to get down after 10 mins. Got onto boat, and only then were we told that we'd be diving before we went to the resort. This meant we had to gear up on board (some of us had to open up our luggage as we had split up our dive gear).
No towels were provided and the food SUCKED. This was a real excercise in cutting corners. The guide was pretty much useless in looking for critters and lost us twice.
We were kept on board for 3 hours waiting for sunset after the last dive, as 4 other divers wanted to do a night dive - even though the resort was just a kilometer away.
After the night dive, we were crammed into an longtail boat to be sent to the resort (they could have sent us earlier, but I guess they were just being penny pinchers).
Overall a real waste waste of time. Avoid this operator at all cost! Be afraid, be VERY afraid !
I attemped my first dive this past week, and was unable to complete. I was underwater for around 3-4 minutes when I was not able to breathe properly. I went back to the boat to re-compose myself before the second dive. After 45 minutes, it was time for the second dive and I was still shaken by the first. So I stayed on the boat and waited for everyone else to dive.
Long story short, I was charged FULL price for a four minute dive with a zero chance of even a partial refund. Tijaan was the person I spoke to who became very rude and would not even budge on the decision. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!
Located 17 kilometres south of the town, the bay at Kata is really made up of two smaller bays, Kata
Yai and Kata Noi. Both are blessed with impressively long, relatively peaceful, sandy beaches. Visitors can swim, sail, windsurf, ...
