Siam Safari Nature Tours
Since 1989, Siam Safari has been a market leader in eco-tourism and adventure travel in South Thailand. Its goal is that of providing authentic and educational tours. The company has received many awards including a British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow award and a PATA. Tours on offer include an elephant trek and mini eco-safari, an elephant and jeep safari, a half-day adventure tour, a one-day jungle safari and a one-day tour of Phuket.
My Husband and I went on the half day trek and it was fantastic. The elephants skin is so rough and once the trek is over you get the option to buy a basket of fruit to feed the elephant that you rode on.
I chose to get the basket and had a bizarre experience feeding the elephant. They can get a fair bit of food curled up in the end of their trunks. It was so mesmerising. I was watching the elephant eat and curl food that I didn't realise I had a palm full of sticky elephant spit. It made the others laugh.
We got to see the three baby elephants paint and kick a ball. I bought another basket for the baby elephants. Apparently, my basket of fruit was too close to the eldest elephants as she proceeded to eat the fruit out of my basket. I was heading to the baby of the bunch. They are beautiful animals.
We were shown how the Thai's tap rubber from the rubber trees and we were shown how they blend their spices for their authentic thai cooking. We were also shown how the Thai's de-husk a coconut ad use every part of it. There is no such thing as waste in that country. They are such a self sufficient race of people.
I thoroughly recommend the Siam Safari. You get lunch as well for the low cost of $69 AUD approximately per person.
Journey from Kamala beach to destination is slightly far, traveling in a 4x4 jeep, bumpy & windy & lots of carbon-monoxide! But the kids loved it! We joined the 6in1 Safari tour. Consists of elephant ride/show, monkey show, rice farming & nature canoe. Enjoyed most, got molested by a baby elephant! Have you been kissed or massaged by an elephant? Should try.
We took the Elephant Trek - 45 minute tour in November, 2006. Pick up at hotel was excellent! The trek was great....you get up close with the elephants, meet baby elephants, learn about conservation, and you get to feed your elephant in the end (200 THB for a basket of food...well worth it!!!!!) The elephants look very well treated and well fed. The handlers (mahouts) seem very gentle with them. You get 2 pics at the end (300 THB for 2) and there is a souvenir shop with some great T-shirts. PLEASE don't ride elephants who are mistreated - pick only reputable companies like this one who help conservation!!!...and they will even come pick you up at the hotel!! Easy!! This trek was well worth the money and you will fall in love with the elephants!!
From the pickup at our hotel to the drop off... this was a very well run operation, making it most enjoyable. Our guide was very thorough in her knowledge of the various portions of the tour and quite funny at times. We learned a tremendous amount of information regarding Thai culture and native industry such as rubber processing. The elephant riding was quite fun, even in a monsoon, we were given umbrellas and ther trek went off as scheduled.... souvenirs are reaonably priced compared to other areas we shopped and our lunch on the boat tour of the bay was a perfect ending to our full day tour.
They took my paralyzed husband up onto an elephant and we rode with the tour group the whole way! Then we saw elephants painting and bought one, curry making and tried some, had an amazing seafood buffet lunch at a great restaurant by the sea (drove us there in landrovers), it was an all-day adventure, including many more features such as training monkeys to get coconuts, I could go on and on, and such a good deal! The lunch alone was worth the cost of the whole day trip. You must do this if you are in Phuket, you cannot possibly be anything short of delighted!!!
The experience was absolutely fantastic. Every aspect of the safari was great. Of course the elephant trekking was number one. My friend and I can't speak highly enough of the tour guides and people of the Karen tribe who are so friendly. When we visit Phuket again next year I'm sure another safari will be on our itinery. You don't come to Thailand without experiencing the jungle wilderness.
