Chiang Dao Cave
Unless you have your own transportation, it is best to book a trip with a travel agent to visit these beautiful caves. This area is very popular with Thais who, at present, outnumber foreigners by ten to one. Chiang Dao mountain and cave provide some of Thailand's most beautiful scenery. The mountain is the third highest in the country, but probably the most dramatic of all to look at. The sacred caves are filled with Buddha images belonging to Wat Tham Chiang Dao. The upper parts of the caves are the most easy to explore because lighting is installed there. If you wish to venture deeper, you should be accompanied by a guide and an oil lantern.
If you have seen a cave before, this is not worth spending your time. The guide, who cant speak english is asking for tip and a photographer sets you up in places that look all the same, demanding 40bat each. I gave the guide 20 bat in tip and he just looked at me like I was stupid. Later on he asked for more tip and told me that other guests give him 100-500 bat. We stayed at chiang dao nest 2 wich is really awesome(!!) but I cant figure out why they recomand this stupid cave tour!
The price is now 100 Baht for the guide with a lantern.
As it's so cheap I would suggest giving generously to the school lunches charity box.
Be sure to venture further up this road to Wat Tham Pha Phlong as well.
Lunch at Chiang Dao Nest 2 is also highly recommended.
