Wat Phra Chettuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Ratchaworamahawihan

Description

Also known as Wat Phra Chetuphon, or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, this 200-year-old Wat is Bangkok's largest. Bursting with history, its highlight is the fantastic gold-plated reclining Buddha. At 46 meters long and 15 meters high, the Buddha is a striking figure to see and is inlaid with pearl on it's feet. Wat Pho is Thailand's oldest learning center. A respected Thai massage school operates here as well. Teaching techniques are taught to the eager, and massages are provided to the weary. Fortune tellers are known to wonder the grounds. The temple's full name is Wat Phra Chettuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Ratchaworamahawihan.

Wat Pho ... a wonder after another
By ,
Visit to Thailand is never complete without the visit to Wat Pho. The experience was exhilarating. It showcases their reverence for their beliefs, love for culture & true craftmanship & ingenuity. I can only stare in awe and disbelief when I saw the Reclining Buddha. A piece of art that transcends all cultural barriers and religious lineage. As you stare in this work of creativity, one can never put aside the talented hands that toiled carefully to place each gold leaf and every piece of the mother of pearl. The temples stood tall against the blue sky. Looking up to the heavens and seemingly intermingling with the clouds. A place where the only the pure and true can reach. Closely observing its grandeur would reveal tiny and colorful pieces of tiles put together to create a majestic architectural wonder. The patterns were so well thought of that it creates a kaleidoscope of earthy rainbow. Inside each temple housed a golden buddha that would always elicit a sigh of admiration in one's lips. Wat Pho is a place to bask yourself in Thai culture. It is a never-ending series of surprises. Each art form seemed to try to catch your attention and leave you in awe and wonder.

Don't miss the Buddha... or the Thai massage!
By ,
Of course, the main draw of Wat Pho is the amazingly huge golden Buddha. It's breathtaking don't miss it! What many don't know is that Wat Pho also houses a school of traditional Thai massage. We decided to give it a try. Boy, it is really something! Thai massage is nothing like the Swedish massage which typically involves massage oils, aromatherapy, relaxing music in a private room. Thai massage is performed on a fully clothed person in a pubilc room with dozens of others others massages are in progress. For an hour, the masseuse (or massues in training) goes at it: twists your neck, waist and legslegs, grinds his elbows and knees into your back and stomach, stretches every muscle, and cracks just about every joint in your body. I can't say it was a super pleasant experience, but boy did I feel good afterwards. I recomend it for the brave. And also, it's absolutely free!! Because it's free, it's very busy (mostly Thai not foreign customers). After signing up, we had to wait about 30 minutes to get a masseuse.

Amazing!
By ,
The buddah is an amazing sight to behold! The Thais have done a really great job of maintaining and preserving this treasure, enabling the public to enjoy, but at the same time maintaining spiritual essence. Only unfortunate thing was that outside we met a friendly thai businessman, who we discovered after about 5 minutes of conversation was one of those hustler who try to take advantage of tourists by agreeing to take them on a tour of Bankok only to take them to their cousin's shop. So be wary!

Amazing photo opportunities!
By ,
Wat Pho was my favorite temple to visit during my recent trip to Bangkok. The reclining Buddha is a must-see. Just remember to bring a good, fast wide-angled lens if you want to capture the whole thing. You can hire a monk to give you a personalized tour of the Wat, and if you really want to get a feel for the place and its various points of interests, this is a good idea. For a few bucks, you can get your palm read in the gift shop. It's fun and you might learn a little something about yourself. The only thing to really watch out for are the con men who hang out along the ouside of the temple telling you it's closed or that you need to follow them to some stupid shop where they get a commission. Other than that, it's a lot more interesting than any of the other temples in Bangkok.

Go now and see it!

There are some sites that people cannot miss while in Thailand. This is one of them. Absolutely breathtaking. The chedis are amazingly beautiful, very ornately made. The statues dotting the place are whimsical and sometimes awe-inspiring.
