Description

This longstanding and extremely popular open-air restaurant is featured in several Bangkok guidebooks. It stands out due to its large dining area and garish orange seating. Suda attracts a good crowd at night, drawn by the low prices, a huge range of dishes, and the very friendly owner. Alcohol is limited to Bangkok beer and Thai whiskey, but at such low prices nobody minds. Mains range from THB50-100. Try the Tuna and Cashew-nuts in Roasted Curry Paste and the Neua Nam Tok (beef waterfall salad).

For the tourists who don't know better
By Vince S, 2/5/08
I was actually very excited to visit Suda after seeing all the great reviews about the food. I've lived in Thailand for 5 years now and have eaten all over the country so I know what authentic Thai food tastes like. The menu is very extensive I must say but the food is no where near authentic. You'll notice that 90% of the clients are tourists and I guess they watered down all the flavors in the food to cater to the tourists. The papaya salad (somtum) was blend, the crab meat with yellow curry was watery and the worst i've ever tasted in Thailand, the seafood dip for the clams was tasteless, the only saving grace was the stir fried vegetable and the pork satay. Any food court in the mall has better tasting food than Suda. If you really want authentic Thai food, skip Suda, there are better options around Thonglor area. When in Rome do what the Romans do...why would you eat where the Thais won't eat.

Best Thai Food
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/22/08
I have been going to The Suda for the past ten years whenever in Bangkok. The food is great, the two ladies that run the place make it what it is.

Consistently great!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/19/11
I have been eating at Suda's for over 10 years, and the main reason is because they always provide consistently great food. Some people may comment that the food has become more tailored to a Westernized palate....but that's just not true. It's spicy, authentic food that's always served with a smile (OK, the last part can be absent sometimes, although they have improved over the years). You can't go wrong with Suda's!

Great food, great prices
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/21/08
Went from review on this site, right by mrt/skytrain so handy from other parts of bangkok. Very cafeteria but open air and popular with locals so thai style but some westerners. Food awesome, battered shrimps, Tom yam Kung, stir fied vegetables and rice - All fantastic but big portions too much for one. Throw in 2 big singha's and some real thai ambience for approx. 400 baht. Excellent, hope to visit again.

I love this place!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/2/08
Suda is my favourite Thai-restaurant! Sure it's a cheap restaurant, but the food is so good, they have a huge range of dishes, the staff is extremely friendly and smiling :) and most important (especially for a "open air" restaurant) it's clean! I would recommend this place to anyone!

The best
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/13/05
In Suda you will get the best price-performance ratio in Bangkok. Absolutely delicious food and good service for a low price. But be aware that you might not get a seat because many people know how good it is!

A-ma-zing
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/10/05
Authentic Thai food. some westerners but great thai staff. if you go in a pair the little old lady hostess will just seat you with another pair. she counts up your bill by examining the empty dishes on your table. One of my favorite things about bangkok.

Suda Rocks!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/7/07
We stayed at the Sheraton on the Sukhumvit and after discovering this precious little gem, we never ate dinner at the hotel again because we had such a good experience there! And cheap too! We had a really big dinner (more like a banquet!) for 2 with alcohol for under $AUS 30!!! The place may look a bit grotty to some (especially to us clean freak westerners!), but I promise that the food tastes all the better for it! Be adventurous, go on and try it! To get there, get off at the Asoke station on the skytrain, and go down the stairs on the right hand side of the station. You should be on the side of the Sukhumvit that has the Sheraton on it, not the Westin. When you come off the stairs, keep walking. It is in one of the little alleyways almost immediately after coming down the stairs. Soi 14 if I remember correctly. It is on a corner. There will be lots of ppl there at around dinner time. A lot of westerners too!!!

Very Over Rated
By Wanderer, 7/14/09
I am very surprised at the rave reviews this place has received. I have been living within short walking distance from Suda's on Sukhumvit Soi 14 for numerous years now and I must say that the food has been changing little by little as the years go by and the change has not been for the better. Once almost the exclusive domain of local Thais it has now become the place for foriegners to go to get toned down westerized Thai food in an authentic atmosphere. Lunchtime still sees quite a few locals who work in the neighborhood but by and large they order the commonest of thai dishes such as pad grapow, pad siew, kow pad etc.. Nightime brings pretty much just tourists and newer expats these days. The curries like panang and gang kieow wan and all the soups such as tom ka gai and tom yam are much milder than you will find at any regular Thai restaurant. This is mainly because Suda, the matronly owner of the place, is an astute businesswoman who knows what most foreigners want and is aware that most really can't take the sharp spicy flavors of real Thai food. I'm not just talking about chilies, but the amount of other essential thai ingredients like garlic and shallots and fish sauce has also been reduced in the dishes as well. If you are not a regular in Thailand or are taking out guests from the West, Suda's is a good place to go because most everyone will find it easy on the palate and similar to what they would get in the average Thai restaurant in Europe, Australia or North America. Suda's is located in a convenient location however, just below the Asoke BTS station and the service is friendly but if you're a true lover of real Thai food, just about every other shophouse style outdoor Thai restaurant will serve you much better food than you'll find at Suda's.
