This longstanding and extremely popular open-air restaurant is featured in several Bangkok guidebooks. It stands out due to its large dining area and garish orange seating. Suda attracts a good crowd at night, drawn by the low prices, a huge range of dishes, and the very friendly owner. Alcohol is limited to Bangkok beer and Thai whiskey, but at such low prices nobody minds. Mains range from THB50-100. Try the Tuna and Cashew-nuts in Roasted Curry Paste and the Neua Nam Tok (beef waterfall salad).
Excellent thai food and nice service, just dont look into the kitchen before you eat, if you are used to western style kitchen you are in for a surprise, but the food that comes out from the kitchen is excellent!
We stayed at the Sheraton on the Sukhumvit and after discovering this precious little gem, we never ate dinner at the hotel again because we had such a good experience there! And cheap too! We had a really big dinner (more like a banquet!) for 2 with alcohol for under $AUS 30!!! The place may look a bit grotty to some (especially to us clean freak westerners!), but I promise that the food tastes all the better for it!
Be adventurous, go on and try it!
To get there, get off at the Asoke station on the skytrain, and go down the stairs on the right hand side of the station. You should be on the side of the Sukhumvit that has the Sheraton on it, not the Westin. When you come off the stairs, keep walking. It is in one of the little alleyways almost immediately after coming down the stairs. Soi 14 if I remember correctly. It is on a corner. There will be lots of ppl there at around dinner time. A lot of westerners too!!!
My family loves eating and trying out new things especially when traveling. Suda is by far the best Thai restaurant we have ever tried. We went twice on our last visit and nothing really compares. We have tried a number of establishments in Bangkok, both the ones written up in travel books for foreigners and the ones you pass in the streets. This is where you can find no-nonsense, value for money, authentic Thai food. I recommend the following: deep fried white snapper fish cutlet w/ fresh garlic & chili tamarind, deep fried hot fish cake thai style, stir fried tuna w/ basil leaves & chili, stir fried tuna w/ cashews & chili, fried squid w/ garlic & pepper, pad thai, tom yum w/ prawns, fried rice w/ crab meat, fried rice w/ vegetables. A kind reminder, for those who are discerning w/ ambience, this is an open-air mom & pop type of restaurant. No frills at all, emphasis is all on the food. Also, being authentic thai food, some of the dishes may be spicy. Take the BTS sky train and get off on the Asok stop. Suda is a corner eatery in Soi 14. Last we were there, they had Pepsi plastic table covers. Enjoy and Bon Appetit!
The place looks a bit grungy, but the food is awesome. Had this been anywhere in the US I would have given it a 0 for ambiance, but it's Bangkok. BKK is kind of grungy so it's pretty much par for the course. We had Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong (large portion), Pad See Ewe (sp?) shrimp in garlic and pepper sauce, fried squid and a few beers. The whole thing was about $13US. My wife didn't want to eat anywhere else the entire week! Suda is now the benchmark by which we Thai food.
I am living in Bangkok (Expat)
Suda is my best finding
So Cheap ...So tasty
The only place who is full all the time
But worth waiting!
Easy location to get to...and the atmosphere is landing in the past and feeling in the future - no doubt ...heaven in Bangkok
In Suda you will get the best price-performance ratio in Bangkok. Absolutely delicious food and good service for a low price. But be aware that you might not get a seat because many people know how good it is!
Authentic Thai food. some westerners but great thai staff. if you go in a pair the little old lady hostess will just seat you with another pair. she counts up your bill by examining the empty dishes on your table.
