Govinda's unique premise is that it guarantees 100% vegetarian Italian cuisine. The atmosphere is very relaxed with a nice al fresco dining area during those dry months or an air-conditioned interior for the wet season, featuring music from Lou Reed to acid jazz. The extensive menu includes a wide variety of pasta dishes and some great pizzas. If you should happen to spot a meaty name on the menu, be assured they are purely imitation style, and well done at that. It also serves cold beer, soda and spirits, including Thai whiskey.
As a vegetarian, I know I will not have to see, smell, and certainly not taste a dead animal. There's never a fish-eye staring up at you when you walk to or from your table. No ribs to spare from chickens, cows, or otherwise. No bones about it whatsoever. No lobster's claws or no feelingless feelers. Not even a clam shell. But that's only a part of what makes this my favourite restaurant in town. What I like every time I visit Govinda is that I know I will get a delicious, high quality meal served to me by a polite and conscientious server. The owners are friendly and very willing to answer questions about the food. What else? Lots of classic and contemporary dishes to choose from, generous portions. Italian wine promotions, tempting desserts. I could go on but this is starting to sound like I work for the place or an advert agency. Put it this way. If for no other reason, you should visit Govinda for their fabulous thin-crusted pizza. Unlike most of the other pizzarias, Govinda gets it ALL right: the crust, the sauce, and all the toppings. I'll bet your belly it's best around.
I've been getting home delivery from Govinda for about a year (visited the actual restaurant last night for the first time) and - obviously - I love it.
The salads are my favourite - they're hearty and filling and FRESH and include more than just lettuce. The chef's salad with gorgonzola and the Govinda salad with cooked spinach and potatoes are the best IMO.
As for pasta, I only tried the spag bol, but it was good, too. My bf is a meat n potatoes type of guy, but he really enjoyed it - so much so that he wants to go back. The pizza I didn't rate so much - thought it could have had more topping, but the base was tasty.
Also worth trying are the fried rice balls, which are not so good for the waistline, but too good to resist. The bread is good, too. I plan to keep Govinda on high rotation for a long time.
We missed the restaurant the first time we drove past - it's on the right just after you enter the soi in a little enclave of restaurants and bars, which has quite a good atmosphere.
It was the biggest surprise of my life when my vegetarian friend brought me to this place. First, everything about the food was so good, so right, so authentically Italian. Wholesome, delicious, rich in taste but not so in calories.
Then, beside the vegetarian menu (they have hundreds), they also have lots of what sounds like real meat menu like chicken and shrimp, sausage or veal, etc. It turns out to be made of tofu-based protein. But you would be really fooled!
The only drawback is it is a bit difficult to park. But if you arrive early, that would be perfect. Otherwise, catch a cab from The Emporium Department Store if you are a local. If you are a visitorr, just catch a cab from wherever you are.
Price is ok for me. While this is not your college-level Pizza place, it offers real value for money. I used to pay a lot more at fine hotels for much less enjoyable Italian food. This Govinda is a winner!
