Cabbages and Condoms, Watthana Khwaeng

Overrated tourist restaurant, which seems to get publicity from the owners very worthy causes, but the food is bland and westernised. Thai omelette with Ketchup? Not the traditional way of servingit I don't think. Food is OK and very safe; but a million miles away from authentic Thai. If this is all you want, stay in Europe or the US and eat the Thai food there, it will be more authentic

I visited Cabbages and Condoms in 2002, and have never had such an amazing experience. If you are travelling to Bangkok, this restaurant is a must. The History behind the condom is fantastic, and the best bit comes at the end of the meal, where you get condoms on the tray instead of mints! The food is great and the hospitality is genuine.

I had the opportunity to have dinner at this restaurant whilst in Bangkok last week. I had images of the typical 'open kitchen' where the local Thai people eat, but couldn't have been more wrong! Though down a small side street, therefore I doubt that we would have ever just found it if Lonely Planet hadn't featured it in their guide. The outside is strung with small fairy lights leading into a beautiful garden, where they grow their own mushrooms in containers. Unfortunately, we were in the middle of a downpour so had to sit inside. The menu was extensive, & recommended a red jasmine rice which was a good choice & can recommend. We had a 3 course meal with drinks & have just received the credit card bill for a staggering �11 - how fantastic is that?? On paying, sure enough they gave you packets of tiny crsckers (which were also served whilst waiting for the meal to arrive, & are cholesterol & gluten free!)& 2 condoms. We left them on the table, but the waiter picked them up & made us take them. An unusual name for a restaurant which wouldn't always attract people to it, but go & have a unique Thai experience!!

Having lived and worked in Thailand for a year, I had the opportuntiy to eat at some pretty amazing places.
Cabbages and Condoms topped the list though! The food was fresh and elegantly presented. Sitting in the beautiful gardens added to the great experience and is highly recommended.
If you go, you must try their 'special traditonal Thai starter'... simply gorgeous!
