Definitely worth seeing - tips included
We took the tour on Saturday 04/17/2010. It was definitely worth seeing. Very scenic! I do recommend that you bargain the prices. European people are charged about 30%+ more than others which is sad but true.
Here's some tips for you - the kind of "wish we knew this before we went" and I hope it helps you:
We were 6 in our party and the bangka trip over to the volcano was 8,000 pesos - we bargained it down to 5,000 but I am sure one can get it down even more.
Once we got to the other side, you really don't need a guide once you find the entrance to the walk but it's not a bad idea to pay a guide as it's the people's only income and sometimes they don't get to guide people for almost one week.
We paid 1,000 pesos for the 6 of us for a guide - the guide only gets 350....the rest goes to 'the boss'. The there is also a fee of 50 pesos to the government....you don't know this until you've paid the guide.
Now if you are very fit, feel free to walk - buy the masks as the horses going up and down the mountain kick a lot of sand up and you will be covered in sand.
If I had to do it over, I would hire a horse for half way up the mountain and walk the rest of the way. Walking down is no hassle....and I am in better shape than most people. My friend hired a horse and we negotiated it down to 1,000 pesos - this included a guide who was probably 10 years old and very annoying (asking for a tip every second).
If you don't take a horse up the mountain, expect to be followed by people asking if you want to rent a horse.
That all being said, it was such a beautiful scenic tour. I loved every moment - even sweating and losing my breath walking up the steep mountain. It's about a 1 1/2 hour walk up the mountain.
LOVE IT!!
