St Anne's Church, Bukit Mertajam

Within the small township of Bukit Mertajam resides this century-old church that retains a respectable patronage. The original church was constructed in 1888 and came under governmental scrutinyin the 1950s for suspected communist links. A new church was built in the vicinity in 1957. On its grounds is the stone of Cherok Tok Kun with ancient Pali inscriptions dating back to the fourth century. Saint Anne's Feast is held here annually at the end of July, attracting crowds up to a quarter of a million and culminating in a candle light procession.
