Hong Kong Bar

Description

This is a tiny bar which has seemingly adopted the discernible sleaze of its neighbourhood just outside its antiquated wooden swinging doors. Once packed with rowdy sailors and their escorts for the evening, today a mix crowd of backpackers and ageing, moustached white men line the bar counter. Somewhat dim and unwieldy in decorations, the worn interiors exude symptoms of rowdiness typical of joints frequented more by men than ladies. A jukebox in a corner plays mostly old songs and a mug of local beer, the beverage of choice, costs around MYR6.

OPEN STILL
By Ancukmu, 3/11/12
March 2012 and it's still there. Saw it on several occasions but did not go in. Sadly it looked a bit dingy and the place next door seemed to be much better patronised.

What lurks beneath
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/25/07
Engage Peter about his golf handicap. That is sure to start a conversation. Memories of talking to Peter, Jenny and their siblings about their version of "a day in the life" make the common bond of humanity all the more important to explore. I have spent many evenings talking about the finer points of cold beer and fine ladies with Peter. I have enjoyed the banter with Jenny about the many women I have trailed through the bar. As an American, I have been able to talk to Aussies as (in my case) brethren of the crown and tipped many a Tiger to our common bond of frontiersman. Far from home, I am at home. Thanks to Peter and Jenny. I visited them after the bar re-opened in 2005 and was hopeful to the progress to their re-establishing a landmark. Jenny quizzed me for any pictures I may have had from my prior trips to our common home there. I have, as would be expected, procrastinated in providing them. Maybe I'll do the right thing and follow through my promise. I only hope that Peter and Jenny can hold on. My hope is that the "beacon of Penang" will hold strong. Timoleon out!

Best Bar In malaysia
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/7/07
With her winning smile and curious wit, Jenny can be nothing but the best hostess in town. Along with her brother Peter they have ran the family business for over half a century. If you are hungry Jen will gladly get a trishaw driver to get some local roti cania, a truly typical indian taste along with some of the best dipping currie you will find any where, all for the low cost of RM20 (about $7 aus) The beer is plentiful and so is the atmosphere, we found that if you just sit outside at the front, say g,day and people will come. Ive been to Malaysia twice now and I have made the Hong Bar my second home. Make sure you take the time to have a game of jenga with Jen, or just soak up the atmosphere and look at some of the plauqes on the wall from the soldiers, sailer's and airmen who have served in the area. Be sure to check out her vast collection of photos of good nights that have been had, and get your photo taken and become part of the history. Davo....

A legend
By George, 8/25/06
This bar was the centre of the Universe for hundreds of merchant seamen on the Far East route from the UK. Back in 1972, before the days of Internet and cheap phone calls, a trip to the Far East meant 4 months of isolation from the world - apart from occasional mail pickups. You cannot imagine the thrill arriving at the Hong Kong bar and the warm welcome which was given by the bar staff, who then opened up as many photo albums as you wanted. Only then when you saw many of your friends in various drunken poses did you connect with who was on what ship travelling where. I was very saddened to hear that the bar had burned and lost these photos... Good luck to the staff in the future, I hope they bring as much happiness in the future as the last few decades.

Penang's best bar
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/31/04
Don't believe in what the previous reviewer has written about the HKB. The bar was by no means seedy, it stood on the same spot for 85 years serving members of the armed forces, ex-pats and locals alike. The atmosphere was at most times friendly - all bars experience trouble now and again - and the HKB was no exception. The walls were decorated with photo's and memorabilia from the countless people who had passed through its doors - mainly sailors and servicemen and women and the owners kept details of all in guestbooks all signed with lots of photos too. There was a fire in the bar in September 2004 and sadly all of this treasure has now been lost. The owners plan to open up a new bar, but unfortunately, you never can replace such a varied stock of riches.
