Batu Caves

Description

This is one of the holiest Hindu shrines in Malaysia and a popular tourist attraction. The Caves are popular not only for being the southernmost limestone outcrop in the Northern Hemisphere, but the labyrinth that makes up the Batu Caves also supports a variety of exotic wildlife. There is a 272-step concrete staircase leading to the temple cave. The main cave holds a shrine of Lord Subramaniam, a Hindu deity. A cave gallery is located at the foot of the caves featuring clay figurines and wall paintings depicting scenes and figures from Hindu mythology.

Great experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/26/11
Hop on the lrt and its only a couple of stops from kl central. Its a great thing to see but you have to have an open mind (not a full day trip). This place is a tourist attraction besides being a hindu temple and since its mainly out doors it does look a bit unclean and weathered. But if you notice the shrines themselves are kept in good conditions its only the outside where tourists are which look dirty. Even though I myself am a hindu I liked going to the nature reserve part of the caves, its in the corner cut off from most tourists. Here you can take a cool dark tour, they have multiple tours daily, and if you are a real cave explorer you can pay extra ahead of time and go deep into the caves off the guided path into the nature reserve. Watch out this isint good for anybody who gets queesy around insects.

So so place to visit
By NOD, 9/9/10
Really cheap to get there, only 1 rm from KL Sentral LRT. But along the steps to the caves are wild monkeys and trashes. Not very clean for a temple. A few shops in front of the cave but nothing worth stopping by.

Take the right attitude up the steps
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/7/10
Some people hear a melody where others hear random notes. The caves will have the same reflective effect. I've been in these caves late at night during Thaipusam--the color, profusion, bell-ringing, coconut cracking and smoke were phantasmagoric and almost hallucinogenic. I've also been there in the early morning and watched sweepers with long palm fronds gracefully sweep through mist, and experienced the tranquillity of the caves. If the KTM commuter train ever gets its act together, they will open the train line all the way to the caves, from Port Klang, and the caves will be very, very accessible, and I will be able to have the third experience of the caves: I want to be in those caves during a whopping thunderstorm. The caves are highly recommended, of course. Bear in mind that most religious sites demand an entrance fee--e.g, Borobodur, and that this holy site is absolutely FREE. What a wonder! If you enjoy the Malaysian/Indian culture around the caves, PLEASE take the KTM train to Klang and wander around Little India--it's a little known gem of a place, very rewarding to the eye and the ear.

Its just another place in history
By vampire, 1/5/09
I was fun at first to be there..but the whole place looks dirty and except for climbing the stairs..nothing much to do/view. From one temple..now you can have a miniature town of temples arising for commercial purpose. Its convenient to park the car & there are food/drink stalls around.

have fun and hang on to your cameras and bags
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/5/08
I head up to the caves everytime I go to KL. it's not as granduer as one would expect, but it certainly is a treat.Once you scale the monolith of stairs and catch your breath, take a break. Once you enter the cave itself tie any loose article or camera/bags to your body. Why? Cause those little monkeys that live in the caves are fast and cheeky. If they get the chance a snatch and grab is all in a days work for these little felows. If you fall victim to a monkey mugging, say good bye to what ever they have nabbed from you. Those little suckers can scale the inside wall with their (your) goodies and be gone. If your lucky enough they might very well get sick of whatevr they have and throw it dowm to the ground. By which time your valuable camera may be salvaged for parts on E-bay. In saying the above. If you are new to seeing monkeys and temples.Go to the caves...It's free to get in and is a very short trip by cab from the city central. sean harcourt-bell

Fabulous
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/9/08
Very nice and intersting place must visit. The atmosphere is so serene and climbing the steps to see the diety is a even more wonderful experience. However, I think the management should think of making some alternative arrangements for senior citizens who are unable to climb the 272 steps so that they can also visit the temple.

great day out
By k, 2/9/08
We drove there from our hotel yesterday. Although we got lost here & there, taking wrong motorways, back & forwards etc., we finally got there and it was worth it! Culturally very intreresting, nothing like it anywhere else. The natural formation of the caves was awesome. Going up the steps was not all that hard even under the intense heat. It is just that there were many visitors when we were there and too crowded for photo shots. Monkeys at the top in the caves, were entertaining to watch, but really sad to see them going through plastic bags and drinking out of sprite tins..... I offered them a piece of green apple and none of them were interested! -very sad for them-. The place was somewhat tatty, there seems to be no regular maintenance, and rubbish wa piled up anywhere, everywhere. They should prehaps charge a few RM for entry, and employ some people to keep the religious place clean....?
