Coliseum Cafe & Hotel

Description

Walk down the memory lane of Malaysia in the 1920s when you dine at the Coliseum Cafe & Hotel. Established in 1921, this cafe is one of the oldest in the country. The old furniture and decorative memorabilia, preserved from when it was first opened, creates a nostalgic feeling. The extensive menu, with more than 300 items to choose from, comprises both western and local fare. Popular dishes include the Baked Crabmeat and the selection of sizzling steaks. There is also a pub that serves both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails.

roll with it....
By ,
Any and every comment about bad service/food is just a reflection that the visitor does not get what this is all about. It's an institution and a pilgrimage (and the best steak and homemade bread in town). Sure the waiters have been there 45 plus years (I think the captain even longer), the table-cloths certainly have been there longer. Relax, smile and above all else, be respectful to these stalwarts of hospitality. Look around you – listen – because walls talk – immerse yourself in the history. You will be surprised how much you enjoy it if you leave your mis-placed values at the front door and roll with it.

Cafe management that disrespects customers
By ,
Apparently, the cafe management and waiters expect everyone who walks in to order a certain amount of food. If you only order drinks, or soup, or like snacks, it's Coliseum's unspoken rule that you will be treated badly. The waiters and manager will exchange glances, make *sighs* to signal their unhappiness on you. Even if it's brunch time, or tea time, they expect you to order the huge main meals. Why not they just put a signboard to tell people so, rather than make impolite gestures that treat customers with disrespect? And to justify people ordering huge meals, make sure your food tastes good

Its Cool!
By ,
I dropped by the place during lunch. The weather was hot out there & I've ordered chill beer. I was cheap & served chill. I really wanted to try the food so I've got the mixed grill which really changed my perception of the place.. it was awsome. can beat the cowboy western grill near my place! all this for an econimical price.

the worst dining experience ever
By ,
i went to coliseum for lunch and i ordered fuyung hai and iced tea. and when my order was arrived, i asked is there any special sauce for my fuyung hai, and the staff rudely ask: "is there any special sauce written on the menu?". so i decided not to ask further question, but in next 2 minutes the same staff approached me and disturbed my lunch by giving me the menu and said: "can you read here? is there any special sauce written here?" so i got a bit upset but i didn't want to bother him so i just looked at him and continue my lunch. another 5 minutes, again, he approached me and asked with an impolite manner: "so what kind of sauce do you want??!!" that's it. so i asked for the bill and leave. i swore that i'll never come back to that restaurant again.

1920s ambiance reminds me of Amsterdam!
By ,
1920s ambiance reminds me of Amsterdam! Feel at home there immediately.... Great place for a cold beer in town or meeting up before going somewhere else. I love sitting there in the afternoon with a drink and making my phone calls, then move on to the next destination. Totally like typical Amsterdam cafes like Weyers and the likes of that. Service is good. Second room is a restaurant. Eaten some good grub there. Come and have a drink with me....

The extra large chicken chop set at normal restaurant's price
By ,
I love dining at Coliseum restaurant, seeing people from different races & background and even "Mat Salleh" love this place very much. With RM 16.90++, you can enjoy a super large chicken chop set ever in town. Come & see for yourself. Last but not least, suprisingly the Fried Mee Hoo also good in taste!

I'll never go back!!
By ,
It was my first time at the coliseum restaurant in Dec 07 and it was the biggest disappointment!! Not only did the food and drinks take forever to come, when the food did come, there was a screw in the fried rice. When we pointed it out to the staff, they did not even apologise. In fact, their explanation was that things like these happens!! My 3 year old son was with me. What if he had swallowed the screw??

What's happened to the Coliseum?
I've being going to the Coliseum for years and in the past have had some of the best steaks I've ever tasted. However, like your other Jan 2008 reviewer, my January meal was awful. We didn't eat 5% of the steak, paid and left. I love the place but it seems it has really started to serve substandard food.
