Top Cloud, Seoul

I have visited both the full service restaurant and the buffet here many times. The food at both was expensive but good until very recently, particularly the steak in the restaurant. However, sometime in early 2008 these restaurants have both changed. My relatives tell me they were served inedible meat at the restaurant, and today I took my mother to the lunch buffet and was absolutely disgusted. The service was appalling. A waitress snatched my mother's plate away while she was still holding her knife and fork over it, and realising her mistake even tried to put it back. The soup was lukewarm. The quality of all the starters was very poor -- literally school canteen fare. But the main courses were shocking. The waiter chucked them onto the table and dashed off, presumably hoping we'd not bother to complain as I noticed the people on the next table just had. I had ordered pilaf, what I got was a miniscule quantity of plain, oily and cool fried rice. It was about half a standard rice-bowl's worth. My mother had ordered the steak and got a thin, very fatty and cold slice of meat that appeared to have been boiled, and a little mound of potato. We eventually got the waiter back and although usually I'd never refuse to pay, the gap between the food and the price in this case was breathtaking. Eventually a rude manager appeared who tried to portray us as the guilty party "for having ordered it", and made a pathetic attempt to avoid responsibility by mumbling his Korean very rapidly and quietly. Didn't work and we eventually left -- I left only 10,000 won on the table for the water. I have never before come across anything like this in Korea and hope never to again.

I am an ex-pat living in Seoul and am always on the lookout for good restaurants where I can take western visitors who want to have western food. I have visited the Top Cloud six times and have not been dissapointed yet. The steak is particularly wonderful! The wine selection is also very good. The view of the city from the 33rd floor is breathtaking. Ask for a window table. I rate the value as moderate only because the restaurant is a bit pricy. However the experience is well worth it.

So many restaurants in seoul tick 4 or 5 of the boxes but this restaurant ticks every box. The setting of this restaurant on the 33rd floor looking out on the cities bright bustling night streets below sets it leagues ahead of the others. The food is delicious, we ate from the set menu in the grill side of this restaurant. It was 75,000 won per person. For this we recieved a small aperitif of smoked salmon, a starter of king crab, which my boyfriend loved despite never having liked crab anytime he has eaten it before. Potato and leek soup, smooth, creamy but remaining light and the perfect temperature. Served with freshly baked rosemary bread. Then for mains there is a choice of 4 on this set menu, i opted for fillet mignon and my boyfriend had the rib-eye steak, accompanied with creamed potato, grilled tomato and asparagus. They also serve a crisp green salad with this. For desert we ate a warm white chocolate mousse with fruit compote. The wine menu is extensive with some fabulous choices. We settled for a rose, Villa M Rosso which as a rose should be was light and fruity with a slight zest but overall sweet. It is most likely my new favourite rose. And at only 80,000 a bottle did not seem unreasonably priced. Every night there is a live band playing who are brilliant they really compliment the atmosphere hightening the already fabulous ambience of the place. The service here is deiscreet and you really can feel that it is only you dining there if you are lucky enough to get a seat by the window facing across the city. Our whole experience was wonderful and we have absolutely no negatives. We will be returning again to try the restaurants buffet which is served earlier in the evening in a different but equally impressive section of the restaurant. If you want a restaurant that won't just be a meal but a memory then this is the one, having eaten at many top restaurants across asia, europe and america this is my new number one, closely followed by one called the fish pot in barbados if you ever happen to be there....! Stop reading the reviews and book it you really will enjoy every part of it.

I was a bit disappointed with the few choices available when it comes to fine dining in Seoul. Top Cloud is one of the few available but the taste and presentation of the food is certainly a work in progress. Comparing to restaurants in other parts of Asia such as the lights of Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok and Shanghai (just to name a few), Seoul has a lot to improve upon.

The food was overpriced. I expected good quality basics at least, but instead it was like an over priced Sizzler. The whilted salad bar left a lot to be desired, the beef stroganof had no seasoning, the service was good but out of context...The view is stunning but it's a high premium for sub par fare. Maybe just stick to the 13 won coffee.

I live as an expat in Seoul since almost two years now. Each time we have visitors from Europe we take them to the Top Cloud. The food is good. The view is really amazing and the atmosphere in the bar is very special and very Seoul-like. I recommend to have dinner at the grill where it is more quiet and to have a drink afterwards in the bar. Just tell your waiter you want to have a drink in the bar after and they will be very helpfull to find you a table. Service is really good in this place.

It's an impressive place to take someone you are trying to impress. Fantastic view. Food is good (buffet better than ala carte stuff). Service is friendly, but due to the volume of customers, a bit like eating in the train station. This is strictly western food, and it is operated by one of the major hotels in town.

Arrived in Seoul at night? Don't worry - go to Top Cloud (you might need to book in advance as the place is a highly posh get-together choice for young Seoulites) and it won't let you down with its exquisite food, impeccable service and, above all, fantastic night bird's view of the magnificently-lit bustling city of Seoul. I would recommend the set menu as it'll save you from all the hassle of choosing from a thick menu but nevetheless puts compromise of deliciousness at no risk. They usually complement the menu with a delicate starter, followed by soup, main course and dessert. Wine choice is abundant and the rate per glass is also very reasonable. I had fish of the day and enjoyed the white wine tremendously. The place has full-length French windows on both sides and presents different yet whole-spectrum view of the city. If you are lucky enough to have a local friend with you, he/she can well point out to you the various architetures around. Services are personal and unintrusive. You hardly feel the presence of any attendant yet he/she would always come to your service at the right moment whenever it's most appropriately and necessarily needed before you could notice from where he/she has appeared. Privacy is most carefully assured yet the guest is attended to equally, if not more, carefully too. How do they manage to strike such a subtle balance? :) All in all, a perfect place to enjoy a high-class dinner and makes a more than perfect night to follow the dinner with a glass of refreshing gin'n'tonic. :))
