More »This building (restored in 1937) was the residence of the well known potter, Kawai Kanjiro [1890-1966], who was pivotal during the 1930s in promoting mingei (Japan's folk arts). Besides a display of his ceramics, some of his sculpture and carvings in wood are also included in the collection. His house incorporates both Japanese and Western living styles, so one can see both tansu and tatami and also some cottage-like furnishings which are Western. His studio and now defunct noborigama (kiln) are in the back of the premises.
