Hotoku-ji Temple
Description
To honor his father, Muneyoshi [1527-1606], Munenori Yagyu [1571-1646] established this family temple. Munenori was an official shogunal fencing instructor, hired by Ieyasu Tokugawa. Yagyu in northeastern Nara is the center of the Yagyu clan associated with the fencing school of the same name. Muneyoshi was the founder of the Yagyu swordsmanship school (a.k.a. Shinkage). The temple's main hall includes statues of Munenori, Takuan, the Priest and a seated Gautama Buddha. Open daily 9a onwards.
