Description

In 1945, the A-Bomb Dome was a government building in the bustling neighborhood of Sarugaku-cho. A nearby photo displays the destruction of the atomic blast. Sarugaku-cho was leveled, save a few trees and telephone poles, and the Dome's structural girders and brick walls. Today, the dome is surrounded by a fence, a lawn and sculpted hedges, and it is lit at night. An aura of that fatal day remains, however, in the rubble at its base, and in its empty, exposed interior.

Hiroshima
By 1st Sgt.USAF, 11/28/07
I was on a troop train in from Yokahama to Ashia, Japan,Sept 6th 1951, on one of the stops we stopped was Hiroshima and was suprised to see the devestation of the city 6 years before, wish I would have had a camera, I could have taken some pictures. It must of been a beautiful city prior to the bombing.

A-Bomb dome a must see
By JUSTIN, 9/6/06
The A-Bomb dome is a must see when in Japan. I am a firm supporter of the decision to drop the atomic bombs on Japan to end the war, but seeing the power of the bomb displayed in this partially destroyed building is amazing. Highly recommended, and easily accessed by the trolley system.

Atomic Bob Site

I couldn't say anything but wow! To know that the building could still be standing after all of these years is simple amazing, and the streets...to know that just under 60 years ago this was nothing but a pile of rubble. The different memorials for the children lost in the bomb was beautiful. There was also a gigantic ground clock there whose hands stay at 8:15 in remembrance of the time the bomb struck there was so much there it would take at least 3 days to see it all.

A disturbing reminder of what man is capable of.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/8/05
The largest structure left standing within 2km of ground zero after the atom bomb exploded at 8:15AM, August 6, 1945. Eerily beautiful. Best viewed in the larger context given by the nearby memorials and museums.
