Description

In the heart of the restaurant and nightlife district, this restaurant/cafe/bar combination is popular for lunch and dinner, serving excellent pasta and pizza. The first floor patio cafe looks onto Kurumachi Koen Park and is a popular coffee-and-cake hangout any time. Group seating makes this a favorite meet-and-eat destination before a night on the town, too. The weathered wood and pale blue color scheme create a comfortable, worn look and an intimate atmosphere. Especially popular are the large, square-sided pizzas served on wooden cutting boards. For a real treat, order several different types to share with companions.

awesome

this is my favorite italian in Hiroshima, used to go there once or twice a month for three years when I was in the military. their pasta, their pizza, everything is soooooo good. If I go back to Japan, I will definitely be eating at Mario Espresso, if its still around, (I haven't been there since 1998)

Mario Espresso - escape to Italy
By Heather, 7/29/04
You can smell Mario Espresso before you see it - the scent of garlic, oregano and all things Italian wafts out of this delightful 3-storied wooden building into the street for blocks. The decor is shabby-chic with nautical touches and faded, ragged blue paint and wooden furniture. The staff are unstintingly efficient and cheerful, with bottles of water and shibori placed on the table when you are seated. A nice touch, I think. The food is casual Italian with the emphasis on pasta and pizza dishes. Mario's usually has a weekend lunchtime special which is very good value and tasty to boot. The ground floor is more of a cafe with your choice of excellent cakes and desserts and top-notch coffee - great for a break from the shopping malls in the surrounding areas. The place is always packed to bursting and seems always to be serving food, no matter what time of the day. Definately worth a visit.
