Uluwatu

Description

Uluwatu lies at the southern tip of Bali in the Badung Regency. Famous not only for its unique position, Uluwatu also boasts one of the oldest temples in Bali, Pura Uluwatu. Being a popular surfing spot for the very experienced, Uluwatu offers a wonderful vantage point to view a spectacular sunset. Warungs or small restaurants perched on the cliff offer a comfortable spot to survey the vast Indian Ocean beyond and below the 300-foot-high cliffs with panorama on three sides. Monkeys inhabit the temple and cliff face hoping for a banana or some peanuts from the visitors.

Just beautiful !
By kklim, 9/19/08
Really enjoyed the view and windy feeling. Sunset was also beautiful. Then, the kecak api performance was also good. Nothing unpleasant about the place except have to be careful with the monkeys.

It was OK
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/24/07
My wife and I were probably just unlucky in our timing (1st week of Nov.) in that we were in Bali for 8 days and never once saw a sunset, including the time that we went to Uluwatu. The temple, itself, is nothing to see, but the cliffside location is nice. Having seen several dances (including kecak) in Ubud, we passed on the one in Uluwatu. We had no monkey incidents, but kept alert for them. I suppose a nice sunset would have added a lot to the experience. However, pound for pound, I believe the east coast of Taiwan and a few other areas of Taiwan (e.g. Penghu or Jade Mountain) can hold their own against anything that we saw in Bali (especially since you can enjoy them without the "natural beauty" of peddlers).

Tips on the monkeys....
By Alexis Neo, 5/26/07
The view is definately breath taking except the MONKEYS of course.... actually i have no bad encounter with them, as i was advised earlier by my tour guide, of not to wear sunglasses, jewellery or other 'attractive' stuff. they just sat there and stare as we passed by because there was nothing to snatch. yes... another thing is do not hold your hands tight in a fist, as the monkeys might think you were hiding something in your hand. last but not least, do not tease the monkeys or provoke them in any way.

those monkeys...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/15/07
I went with 3 children and my wife, and came back with 2 children and my wife, they stole all my loot, and my smallest child. beware of the monkeys, carry a weapon at all times.

All tourism attraction in 1 place!
I like the fact that by going there 1 time I was able to see them all: the Temples, the path on top of the hills (it looks like a miniature of the Great Wall in China), the monkeys, the Kecak Dance and of course the wonderful sunset.

Spectacular views, nasty monkeys
By Peech, 7/14/06
The view from the cliffs are truly spectacular. I can see why they chose to situate this holy temple here. I do not mind that the temple is "run down". But I do so very much hate the monkeys, who run around snatching your eye glasses and hats, and work together in teams to distract you. I am sure that they have been trained by people around the temple. To get your things back, you are asked to offer fruit to the monkeys, which you can "buy" from these people. It annoyed me to no end that my glasses were damaged this way. Next time I will go back with a big stick and show no mercy to these monkeys... You can watch the kecak dance at sunset here, although I have never done so myself.

Beautiful view except for monkeys
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/1/05
View from the cliff is spectacular. Just beware of the monkeys though. We had a guide who assisted us throughout and he told us the history of the place while beating the bushes with a stick to scare the monkeys away!

Uluwatu
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/21/05
Our tour guide through Continental Airlines made this tour fantastic. The view was also exceptional. I did not, however, like the mean monkeys and the temple was quite worn down and not as nice as I'd expected. It was, however, fun to wear a sarong and learn about the history and culture. I haven't been to any other of the Balinese temples, but its not one I'd care to see again and don't really recommend.
