Shanghai Art Museum
The Museum occupies a heritage building that once overlooked a racecourse. This landmark of old Shanghai is People's Square (Ren Min Guang Chang). There are twelve exhibition halls on five floors showing modern and traditional fine art. Temporary art shows are also organized regularly. Visitors can take part in sketching and painting lessons and art lectures. The lecture hall can also be hired for functions. A gift shop is on the first floor.
The building apparently was the most luxurious race club building in the world when it was first built. The view from the cafe on the roof lets you see the old race course. I did the tour mentioned on the shanghai race club website, which takes you through the city and ends at this building. Worthwhile if you want to understand the whole story of the racing scene in Shanghai back in the thirties
The Shanghai Art Museum was a very exciting place. The outside of the bulding looked very cool. But almost all the Chinese people were taking photos even if guards were standing here and there.Maybe they don't know the manner at the museum yet.
One of the most modern and impressive art museum in the world

I visited the Shanghai Art Museum in May 2004.
What a fabulous looking museum. From the majestic view of the building from the outside to the regal looking decor of the inside. I was very impressive from the beginning of the tour. There was marble everywhere. The museum is a mixture of the older more traditional looking museum of the Met in NYC to the very stylish looking Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) of NYC. On a footnote, the bathrooms in SAT are 5 stars . The bathroom matches the luxurious feeling of a bathroom in the Four Season Hotels. Marble tiles were everywhere. The lighting of the museum also left a very nice impression with me.
