Dong Tai Road Antique Market
Although located on another street, it is still considered a part of Antique Alley, a shopping oasis for Chinese antiques situated near the Hong Qiao Airport. Dong Tai is spread over two blocks and has many shops and vendors selling vintage goodies, furniture and bric-a-brac. Items vary from international gems such as chairs imported from New York City in the 1930s, to local pieces such as furniture from old Shanghai theaters. Experienced antique collectors will be able to pick up some excellent buys.
I visited the Dong Tai Road market recently, I'd say 80% of what is there is either fake or has been altered somewhat. There were some very nice wood carvings and statue fragments that were convincingly old. With the exception of a couple of potential bargains from 1 dealer I found the other vendors unwilling to deal. It was however an interesting place and I plan to go back. Be prepared, it's dirty, but a genuine experience.
We went antique shopping when we were in Shanghai this June. We found a beautiful pair of carved wood panels, paid in cash and are still waiting for them to arrive after over 5 weeks. Business card we got has incorrect contact numbers and e-mail info. We should of carried the goods back with us or used a Visa card. The business was called Wu Hai Bin located at 46 Dong Tai Road.
