Incompetent service, website is a bunch of lies
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/21/11
I went in last week to have a suit altered, and to have maybe one or two suits and a few shirts made. I had checked the website before, when doing some research on Dave's, and they clearly state that they do alterations on suits, even going as far to call it a "service to the community" AND "Although we are not a repair and alteration service per se, we will repair or alter anything for little or no cost as a service to the community. Some ask why we would de this if we make no money from it. The simple answer is that it is helpful to our customers, and it brings in new people who might otherwise never had made it to our door" . The website also gives a price estimate (500 rmb) for the whole thing.
Well, when I got to Dave's that was evidently a load of bs. There were no customers when I walked in on a Saturday afternoon, but I still got no greeting from the staff member standing at the door, doing nothing, and no acknowledgement from the staff member sitting at the desk, doing admin paperwork or something. Fine. So I looked around for a bit and checked out the samples and the fabric, but still no help. I walked up to the lady who was standing around, took out the suit, and asked if we could do alterations (first round on an off the shelf suit, which had not been altered at all before). She said no, they don't do alternations. I said that the website clearly says they do alterations, and she said again, no, no alterations. I asked if there was anyone else I could speak with (as she was obviously not a manager), but no, no one else to speak with.
Fine, waste of my time, but I've lived in China long enough and can deal with minor annoyances like this. When I got home, I decided to write an email about my experience and again asking if I could do alterations. I figured I'd get an apology and an invitation to come back when there was a more competent employee in. This is the answer I got:
Dear Cecilia
I am sorry, our tailor are good at our own suit alterations. till now dont
consider revise others suit excpet Dave's
B.regards
Coco
Totally useless and inconsistent with the service detail on their website. I wrote back and explained my position. There has been no response.
With plenty of tailors in Shanghai, there's no reason to go to Dave's and suffer the unprofessionalism. At the prices they charge, they should at least have some staff with a clue.
Oh, and the stuff in their store, finished clothing and materials, looked average. Nothing special, and definitely not Savile Row.
