Dave's Custom Tailoring

Description

You have 48 hours in Shanghai and you want a superior quality suit custom-made. Fear not. Thirty hours, two fittings and multiple decisions later (English or Italian fabric? Double or single-breasted?), Dave's Custom Tailoring can have you on your dapper way. The shop has a large selection of local and imported cloth for both suits and shirts. Dave's 35 years in the family business are obvious with his vast knowledge of fabric and fit, yet his prices will not break the bank. Sorry ladies, Dave only makes men's suits.

suits
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/15/11
I had two suits made, but without time for the fitting, I had to trust the initial measuring.. Suits arrived in London as promised and fitted absolutely perfectly. Great service, start to finish. I've subsequently ordered an additional waistcaoat. I would heartily reccomend this tailor.

Incompetent service, website is a bunch of lies
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/21/11
I went in last week to have a suit altered, and to have maybe one or two suits and a few shirts made. I had checked the website before, when doing some research on Dave's, and they clearly state that they do alterations on suits, even going as far to call it a "service to the community" AND "Although we are not a repair and alteration service per se, we will repair or alter anything for little or no cost as a service to the community. Some ask why we would de this if we make no money from it. The simple answer is that it is helpful to our customers, and it brings in new people who might otherwise never had made it to our door" . The website also gives a price estimate (500 rmb) for the whole thing. Well, when I got to Dave's that was evidently a load of bs. There were no customers when I walked in on a Saturday afternoon, but I still got no greeting from the staff member standing at the door, doing nothing, and no acknowledgement from the staff member sitting at the desk, doing admin paperwork or something. Fine. So I looked around for a bit and checked out the samples and the fabric, but still no help. I walked up to the lady who was standing around, took out the suit, and asked if we could do alterations (first round on an off the shelf suit, which had not been altered at all before). She said no, they don't do alternations. I said that the website clearly says they do alterations, and she said again, no, no alterations. I asked if there was anyone else I could speak with (as she was obviously not a manager), but no, no one else to speak with. Fine, waste of my time, but I've lived in China long enough and can deal with minor annoyances like this. When I got home, I decided to write an email about my experience and again asking if I could do alterations. I figured I'd get an apology and an invitation to come back when there was a more competent employee in. This is the answer I got: Dear Cecilia I am sorry, our tailor are good at our own suit alterations. till now dont consider revise others suit excpet Dave's B.regards Coco Totally useless and inconsistent with the service detail on their website. I wrote back and explained my position. There has been no response. With plenty of tailors in Shanghai, there's no reason to go to Dave's and suffer the unprofessionalism. At the prices they charge, they should at least have some staff with a clue. Oh, and the stuff in their store, finished clothing and materials, looked average. Nothing special, and definitely not Savile Row.

Highly Recommended
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/16/07
Recently bought a suit (English 150 weight), a beautiful velvet jacket and five shirts. Initially, the sales lady was a little rude by pushing inferior local 120 weight cloth, but was able to make my choice clear and got the cloth that I wanted. Three fittings and the article were delivered in about 10 days. Very happy with the end result! Although the clothing took much longer to be created, as compared to my Hong Kong tailor, the end product was perfect and well made. Would highly recommend the tailor to anyone!

Disapointed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/2/07
I was so disappointed. The suit cost over $1400 US D - so not cheap. It was supposed to be a special treat to myself. This place is a kind of factory where they pile the people through. The service was complacent and the initial result was a poor fitting baggy suit that I would not have brought in a 70% sale. I had to return repeatedly to get a proper fitting. I would discourage others from gong to this place.

Great quality-Great price
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/27/04
I bought ten custom shirts from Shanghai Dave when I was staying at the Ritz in October of 2001. I still wear the shirts. They have held up very well and the price was fantastic.
