Back in the mid-1980s, when The Grape was just a hole in the wall, it became a regular gathering place for Shanghai's small expatriate community. It remains a favorite among locals and expats and the service is as consistent as McDonald's. Favorites include Tie Ban Niu Rou (like a sizzling plate of Mexican fajitas), Gu Lao Rou (sweet and sour pork), and Gong Bao Ji Ding (chicken with peanuts and chili peppers). It now has another branch: 2606 Yan An West Road, +86 (0)21 6295 2518.
I am Chinese and have visited Grape twice. The food was below average on both occasions, when I compare to the myriad Chinese restaurants I have tried and tested in Shanghai. Grape has historically been a favourite with tourists as it has an English menu, but increasingly most other local places worth going to have now got English menus too.
A great little place, the outside is welcoming and the attentive staff make it a good place to eat. Mistakenly chose a few too many side dishes and missed out on some of the delights waking passed me from the kitchen. Definitely worth a second (and probably several more) visit.
I had the best Chinese food EVER at this restaurant. The fried rice and green beans were out of this world. As well as the rest of the food I sampled there. The service was fast and the value was fantastic. I would definitely recommend this to anyone travelling in Shanghai.
