Tucked away in an alley, this spacious yet intimate bar/restaurant is well worth finding. It boasts an extensive jazz CD collection ranging from Miles Davis' "West Coast" style to Stan Getz bossa nova, so you can always be sure of some funky accompaniment to your drinks. The hip, Bohemian flair, plus the dim lights and large tables make it the ideal place for groups to go drinking. The food is average, but the menu spans three continents and the drinks are simply fantastic. Try the sake or Long Island Ice Tea (CNY30) after a hard day in Beijing.
This place has a really good dish called the Sign Steak, which is cubes of steak with corn and bean sprouts delivered on a sizzling plate. I got this the first time I went and can't stop ordering it every time I go now as it is so good. They also have good shrimp tempura, garlic bread, potato au gratin. The menu is pretty large and overwhelming actually. Draft beer is really cold. Good place.
I had an appointment in Jazz Ya, a dark bar on east side of San litun North street, a bit tucked away, and to my surprise it had evolved into a nice white swan... nicely designed, yet small restaurant. A fairly diverse menu, with japanese noodles dominating.
Nice cutlery, nice porcelain, friendly service - though a bit slow -, and good food. Although the taste was a bit on the Chinese side... And unlike the other Japanese restaurants, no Chinese Japanese yelling at every visitor coming in. THAT is an improvement indeed.
Will go there again for sure.
The food is decent. The atmosphere is ok. But the service was awful. I can't remember ever being in a restaurant with such an incompetent staff. A few people recommended this place to me, so I went. I was terribly disappointed. The staff were so bad it seemed as if they not only didn't care, but actually had some kind of problem.
I will not go back.
